Looking at buying my first carbon road bike, second hand. I am a bit concerned about this section of the chainstay, seller says it is from chainsuck. The rest of the frame looks great.

It looks superficial to me. I would do a tap test to check for structural issues. Since this is your first carbon frame, I'd have a bike shop check it out for you.

Looks like chips to the clear coat to me.
It's all downhill from here, except for the uphills.

I agree. Looks like chipped paint, nothing structural

I see the chips to the clear coat. But I also see the worrying circular mark indicating that a repair has perhaps been made. We have this saying in the UK: I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Yes, it is damaged and someone sanded through 3 layers of carbon. I would not touch it with Valbrona's barge pole. Even if he asked me to.

Disagree. Someone sanded thru the coats of clear. Chainstay is fine.

To compile the answers: It MIGHT be ok(or not)

My advice do not purchase this frame, because if you are already worrying about it wait till you start riding it!

OP is a little dated but I say BS on chain suck. This pics must be inverted otherwise its ND side. If this is on the bottom of the drive side chainstay its not likely a result of chain impact. Likely curb impact or from a shoe from a wreck. I'd pass on this type of scenario too and catching a BS statement from seller.

Edit: Oh nevermind. I see that it was disclosed in the pic description but the chain is not going to whip there. You would see damage in the BB area from suck too.
