Great idea! I've been thinking of ways to make my SRAM Red22 chainset more black - the silver doesn't go with my next build. Is there much of a weight penalty?

IMO this would be a mistake. Yes the aesthetic is not what you want, but the shifting performance will not be as good and you will not have proper use of the 11 and 12 tooth cogs (the chain may catch on the teeth of the big ring when in small ring x 11 or 12.

I didn't like the shifting of the 36/52 red black rings.
If you want something darker for red 22, you can go with the Force 22 rings, or praxis if you want to save some weight. The red 22 rings are generally heavy, but stiff. You'd probably save some weight with other rings. see viewtopic.php?f=3&t=103730&start=270
