The pedal threads in the brand new FSA Energy crankset I have just bought look okay by sight, but common sense would tell you these just aren't right because they are so slack. But surely they couldn't have been made so obviously defective?

Anyone else come across very slack pedal threads?

Thanks.

Valbrona, there has been some chatter lately about thread issues with FSA cranks and that FSA does not honor problems with threads stating this is 'pilot error'. If the threads really are slack, I would return to sender or discuss with the shop, because if they fail when the pedal is installed due to poor tolerances, then you have little proof to argue it was a production issue.

If you have calipers you could check the bore size
9/16x20tpi BS cycle thread core diameter is .5093" or 12.94mm and the tapping size is .5118" (13mm)
If it's much over 13mm the threads are probably oversize so don't install them.

FSA and poor QC who'd a thought it

I've had this problem with a FSA crankset on my cyclocross bike, cost me 2 pairs of pedals. Replace, exchange, don't ride them.

If I say this is a 'Focus' branded FSA Energy crankset bought incredibly cheaply from a German eBay seller ... I guess that kind of seals their fate.

Wait a minute Valbrona, are you saying this was bought incredibly cheaply on eBay? I can't say as I have a very high regard in general for FSA, but perhaps you bought a counterfeit? If so, it's hardly fair to slam FSA.

I've had no problems getting 2 replacements off one purchased pair of k-force light cranks. They sent entire new retail set boxed with lube and accessories no questions asked. There was some issue with the threaded pedal inserts on one and the other came loose at the spindle. But I will admit that it was not me it was my dutch friend who is a 2000w freight train who managed to break these. They seemed fine under me.

That stinks. I sometimes think it is luck with these rma departments and who you get in touch with. This was an office in italy I think.
