DA 9000 crank : other than 34T inner with 50T outer?
Moderator: robbosmans
Guys, i'm currently running a Campy SR crankset with TA chanrings. Those vary between 50-34, 50-36 and 50-39 depending on the ride. I'm now switching to a full DA9000 Di2, incl stock 50-34 crankset, as I really want a 50T outer. In every Shimano manual or webpage, the use of other than a 34T inner is "not allowed" when used with a 50T. Do you forsee any problem running 36 and 39 DA 9000 inner rings with the stock 50T outer? Running a 52-34 for example is asking for problems, but as 36 and 39 is a closer ratio than 34, I can't think of any real problem. Right? Any field experience here?

I have Ultegra 6800 crank (not really different than DA9000) and I'm running 50/36, against the instructions. It works perfect, shifting is excellent. And I have to agree, 50/36 rocks - 50t big ring allow you to stay on big ring for more time and still gives you plenty speed (50/11) while 36t inner ring helps on long, steep climbs

Nothing, exept the 53-34 combi But if you use a close range cassette (12-25 ,11speed) like me, with a 50T, you can spin at 100 - 105 rpm, maintaining around 22mph without crossing the chain to much. And you have 1 or 2 extra cogs left for easy slopes. For real climbs, just drop the 36 and enjoy the 1 tooth steps until 19T. 36-25 is enough for everything but real high mountain stages. I've got the 34 for that! Still on the same 12-25 cassette. Talk about versality!
I'm by no way a gear masher or power sprinter, so no 53 for me! And don't need one to reach 21 avg on solo 100 miles rides with almost 5000ft elevation Just turning the legs! (95 rpm avg on most rides...)
And thx to the others for confirmation that either 36 or 39 works fine

I'm backfrom the mechanic who pressed in the BB cups (with sleeve ). When I asked for ordering some 36 and 39 innerring, I got a clear NO for the 39 to go with the 50 outer. As I'm running DI2, and thus front shifts done with force, according to him, whe on a 39 inner, the chain is pushed against the vertical innerpart of the 50, causing to much stress to the 50, with broken rings as a result after some time. He talks from real experience with 2 customers. Someone running a 50-39 combo and DI2 here?

Me too

A 34 is of no use for me exept 1 or 2 times a year, and don't worry about that. Instead I worry about the use of a 36 for the summer hilly rides and 39 in the winter, as the rides are flatter than in the summer month's. If 50-36 poses a real problem (time will tell), I can always try an authorised 52-36 combi. After >20 years on a 50 outer, I'll have to change my habits a bit, but the same was true when I started to use a 36 instead of 39 (I ran 10 speed 13-26 before the 11speed era, now 12-25...)

I love 52/36 as the best all-around crankset. I pair it with a 12-27 or a 12-29. 52-12 is plenty for downhills and I can climb anything and keep a high cadence with 36-29.
I've been running 50/36 with 12/25 for 3 or 4 years.
I found the original 50/34 front jump to be slightly annoying, needed 3 clicks at the back to get a comfortable cadence after a front shift. For the sake of losing 3 or 4 gear inches at the bottom end (which I didn't need or use) the 36 is ideal.

I really, really hope you are right!! 39 defenitely dont work with 50 + di2 : chain gets stuck between the 2 rings on downschift, to much stress on upschift. Both resulting in a cracked 50. A least, this is the experience some other users posted on the net, and confirmed by my mechanic. Let's hope 36 will do better
