Having some problems with removing graphics from an on one stem. Soaked in acetone and tried to agressively brush it with a rag, but no effect. Neither with nail polish remover (albeit, that's acetone free)

Any other advice? I'm not against removing the whole anodising, just, I do not know anyone who'd re-anodise it for a reasonable price

Sodium hydroxide / drain cleaner will strip the anodize.

Thanks. I know how to remove the anodising, I just do not have the knowledge of RE-anodising the stem :)

Formerly I've applied alkaline onto a seatpost, polished it, and used it as a "mirror", but I'd prefer this stem in either glossy or matte black. OR shall I go for the raw mirror polish to make a sharp contrast with the black HS cups-spacers-handlebar? :)

My other ride has silver stem with silver bartape, albeit, with black parts, and it looks quite eye-drawing, refreshing.. hmm.. :beerchug:

Maybe these are laser-etched graphics? In that case only sand blasting can help.
For painted ones I use green Nitro Mors.

if you can get hold of some carbo lift, it works well in these situations.
Just light sand and respray. I have sprayed stems matt black and they come out looking great.

Thank you. I want to keep it low cost, as for 10-15 euros I can pretty much get a new stem. :)

Probably will leave it as it is, the only thing I can do at home without buying any stuff is simply put it into boiling hot water with some trisodium-phosphate, and then lightly sand it. It would result in a dull-matte raw aluminum stem without paint-anodising-graphics. Just plain raw alloy.

Not sure about that in the long term. Teeth replacement is very expensive around here.

here. I know its for 26mm handlebars, but hey, I have 26mm handlebars :D And I'm a bit afraid that 130mm will be short.. :welcome: and the postage would be very low due to the fact that I always buy stuff with 3-4 other people , so we can share that 10 euro between us for the courier costs...

Also check ebay for Uno stems and there is always the opportunity to visit local distributors..

oh, and also, if later I'd opt for OS bars, there always will be listings with low asking price..

see:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FSA-OS-99-OS-99 ... TQ:US:1123

actually missed these due to the fact I forgot to set the alarm :D

but as I said, I'm still not sure whether 130mm will be enough :\ My other ride has 120mm bars, BUT the handlebars has 100mm reach (albeit, it's curved back so the effective reach is approx. 80mm, Syntace Racelite CDR bars in XL)

130mm stem with compact curved 75mm reach bars would suffice? After all, on a compact curve bar, you can set the brake levers lower-further than on ergonomic bars, if you set the tops -hoods with flat transition between them..

Also asked a local car painter for price of sanding-masking and re-spraying the stem, he quoted me 3 euros for that. So, probably will take that chance.. He had done three frames and a few chainsets, older stems, rims for me so far, so probably I can trust him not to fk up with this job..

If you need a stem longer then 130mm maybe you should think about sizing up your frame, unless you already have the largest available one.

I use paint stripper. The stuff that I use is meant for stripping decks but it works and is not too smelly. I first paint a thick coat onto the graphics, cover it with plastic wrap and then let it sit for fifteen minutes or so. After that I use an abrasive pad or steel wool to clean off the gooey graphics. It usually needs some further Acetone cleanup but overall this process is quite effective. Paint stripper will not affect the anodized finish.

Using only acetone seems to take a lot more effort in my experience.
