For years I have been running super record 12/25 cassette. But just recently, I decided to try an 11/27 Ultegra cassette on my aero bike. What a breath of fresh air. Wish I had changed years ago. However, do I go Campagnolo 11/27 or 11/29 ?? What kind of riding do I do.......lots of climbing as I live in a hilly area but no monster climbs. All help appreciated /. Thanks guys.

I think only you can answer your question. You said you've been using a 25, well, do you find you need one or two more gears? What are you running up front?

53/39 and lots of climbs equals a 50/34 change out to me but if you don't want compact then either 28 or 29 rear should be fine. You should decide based on if you want the 29 or what gears are in between for your needs.

I recently did a 1hr climb on 7-8 percent grade as part of a 40 mile loop with 5k ft of climbing and my wheels almost fell of on a 53/39 using 11/25. I will take the time next go to swap to compact rings and 11/28 for piece of mind.

For me, the blessing in disguise was the 52/36 paired with 11/27....

With a 5.0W/Kg FTP and a small wallet I find my 52-36 with 11-28 cassette the perfect combination for everything from hilly grandfondos to superflat races.

Cheers

As said before above, only you can really decide which one suits best.

I have both and found that I only used the 29 tooth as a 'bail out' gear when my fitness was not up to the task but I had no option other than to continue upwards. I use the 11-27 on most of my bikes now, the 27 tooth is used for the steep kickers - most of the climbs I can sit and spin on 23 or 25. However, that is just my experience and everyone is at a different place.

I prefer the 11-27 because the ratios are closer in the shorter gears - I much prefer the transition from 23t to 25t on the 11-27 than the transition of 23t to 26t on the 11-29 cassette.

Remember that Contador used a 32 at the back from time to time. It seems that amateurs could use a 29 then.

Same here, 5.x w/kg at FTP. I love my 52x36 + 11x28. Up the steepest climbs in the southeast and can spin optimally up the hardest 20%+ pitches. Sure, I could grind it out in a 39x23 but i'm much faster in the 36x28. more efficient.

We did a ride recently with a 20% grade finish, I stayed seated and churned out a smooth 450w. Looking behind me everyone else was out of saddle, weaving, etc. Not optimal.

The only time I don't love the 11x28 is when doing intervals on the flats. Then I want my 12x25 for the 1 tooth changes to get the cadence just right at whatever power I'm targeting. For some reason on the 11x28 I'm always between two cogs with a 2 tooth change. So the training wheels get the 12x25, group rides/fondos/etc get the 11x28 treatment.

And on that note...

How did this become the power profile thread?

Didn't mean it to be. Point is that even if you are quite strong, a 36x28 is often the right gear, lesser would be slower.

get the 11-29

I was in the Ardeche area (one of the group with ace photographer Basilic !) last week and after the 4th day of +2000 metres denivele, we hit a +15% climb

https://www.google.fr/maps/@44.337865,3 ... 56!6m1!1e1

and I was searching for a gear smaller than the 34/27 that I had. On single day rides I can just about get away with the 27...

If you dont need it, nothing lost ; when you need it your legs and lings will thank you !!

Get the 29, deeper gearing also makes you chain line better in the gears you use most even if you don't use the 29 often.

I would definitely vote for the 11-29.
