How much more capable does a bike need to be?

I don't think so. I mean, it lost 1:30 in the last two stages, how good can it really be? :P

Looks like Specialized increased the frameset/module price by $400 from $5,800 to $6,200. Specialized being Specialized.

Was just thinking to myself that this and the price Trek is charging for the Madone 9 is starting to get a little too stupid IMO.
When you can buy a new car for less than the price of a bike (sure they are cutting edge, but still), its time to re-evaluate just how much I "need" the latest and greatest.

Well, if economics has its say, it'll eventually reach a tipping point where the price starts to come back down again. At least there's a huge amount of variety out there.

The worst thing about the Madone 9 prices is that to get the race geo you have to shell out a shitload of cash and I don't believe you get the module (I could be wrong) with the bar/stem. Also it appears on the U.S. site that you can only get H1 in team livery and that the matte black is an H2

Project One is not released yet on the Madone 9, so you will get more options in H1 fit eventually. It will be insanely expensive though. Completely agree there.

A Red Smoke version would tempt me nonetheless.

Im not so sure on that.
I think its more of a case of cashing in on some people's need to have the latest and greatest.

I wonder how many more pro level bikes Spec sells compared to S-works bikes? (or maybe Im wrong and its the other way around!)

Either way, Ive decided that I simply can't justify the kind of cash it now takes to buy a top level bike and I wont play the manufacturers price games anymore.
Sure, it wont change anything, but at least I will sleep better at night

Andrew69 - Yes. I bet that Specialized raised their prices, because a lot of people were interested in getting the Venge Vias. Increased demand - increased price. If iy happens that demand for the bike isn't that great, I bet that Specialized will lower the prices again. If I remember correctly, Specialized only manufacture the orders that they recieve and double that. That means that if there's a higher demand than what they have anticipated, it takes quite a while to get a bike from them.

Specialized have probably calculated x-amount of new Venges for the next year. If they already can see that the demand is higher than what they have anticipated, the next batch of bikes will probably be sold at a higher price due to supply and demand.

You can see the same thing happen with Canyon. They started out as a company that really gave bang for buck. Now they have a hard time keeping up with demand, which means that they have had to raise their prices. If you look at Canyon today, they're not really that much cheaper than a lot of alternatives.

We need to all band together and not buy bikes that we know are too expensive and this will hopefully flood the market with less expensive expensive bikes. If we all did this with all the too expensive items in the world we would all be better off.
