In all seriousness though, I worry about the biomechanics of cycling with young, developing legs. The kids are turning junior gears at pretty high RPM. It's a real challenge to turn high RPM on a crank that is too long. It's very tough on the knees. Heck, I use a 165mm crank for my hillclimbs so I can comfortably turn a high cadence in a low gear. So I'm a bit of a nut about matching crank length to leg length. I'll never criticize anybody for doing what works for them or their kids. But I'm a strong advocate for junior gearing, proportional crank length, and a proper fitting kids' bike.

I agree with you on doing that.
It shure will give the kid an advantage compared to others that have too long crank arms.
I personnally think cycling doesn't put that much stress on the body. And this "stress" will usually translate in "improving very fast".
And, like you said, the kids use very small gears ( In the Québec province, we have 42X16 in the U11 cat., 46X16 in the U13 cat.

Growing up, especially when he hits 12-16 yrs old, will give the kid much more stress than anything else. Then it's time to be very careful with work load, correct setup (because they change shape so fast), etc...
...And let them sleep for 16hrs a day so they can recover....growing up

Doing some negotiating. We just received some really generous offers of pro-deals from both Rotor USA and RIDEA USA. Prices are about the same. I know Rotor very well and can't imagine going wrong with them. But RIDEA makes this and my son desperately wants it. hahahaha

I find it rather amusing that you are worried about spending $300 on a crank when your kid has such a sweet (and pricey!) setup. Di2, carbon wheels and frame, air attack... Man, when I was racing as an 11 year old my parents got me a 15 year old centurion that weighed almost as much as I did.

I have to worry about price on stuff he will outgrow in short order. All those other parts have been used for several seasons and, apart from helmet, were purchased used on ebay. Helmet was also an ebay find but purchased new. Everything except the pedals, seatpost and skinsuit were purchased on ebay. Those other items are sponsor-discounted. I live on a single income budget.

Oh, and those are my 8 year old wheels. He only gets to use them for race days.
