Help me think through best places to lose weight
Moderator: robbosmans
Hi all,
I have listed all of the specs on my bike below. Could you guys who are experienced give me some tips on how to upgrade / reduce weight a little more? I'm interested in upgrades that save weight and increase performance at a good value ($/g). Not interested in tubular wheel set.
Currently, the bike is 15.2 lbs including Garmin mount. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Frame: Cervelo 2009 S2 (56)
Fork : 3T Funda Pro
Wheels: Mavic Ksyrium ES (Anniversaire Edition) - 1490g claimed
Skewers: Mavic stock skewers (83g/pr)
Tires: Michelin Pro Race 3 SC
Tubes: Michelin Air Comp Ultra Light
Seatpost: Cervelo S-Series Carbon Seatpost
Stem: 3T ARX Team 80mm 6 deg
Handlebar: 3T Ergonova Team (42)
Components: Sram Red 22
- includes (Crank 50/34 compact, RD, FD, Shifters, Aerolink mechanical brakes)
Cages: Specialized rib cage carbon (2)
Bar Tape: SRAM supercork
Pedals: Speedplay Light Action Cro-Moly
Cables: Yokozuna Reaction
Thanks for your help!

Apologies. Was fitted for a 155mm wide Specialized Toupe Expert saddle that weighs 230g. Could save 70g moving to the Pro version of the Toupe saddle in the same width.
Think the frame is a tad large but that part I'm stuck with. Stem was brought down to 80mm when fitted.

Unfortunately, no no more room to cut the steerer.
Thought about lighter skewers but doesn't seem I could lose more than 40g that way without significant cost/ sacrificing reliability or convenience..
Guess the saddle and the wheels are the natural places.

KCNC Z6 steel skewers - save 25g for $34
Light hubs on xr200 or similar light clincher rims - save 200 grams for $400-600
Ditch the 150g Red big ring for an ST2. Save 50 grams for $70
Titanium pedal spindles on ebay for playspeed. $40, not sure how much you save.
But bottom line, your frame is porky.

Thanks . Will look into QRs . Do you all recommend the SS KCNCs ? I did a search for the speed play spindle replacement but it seems like the chromoly light actions have a different build than the other zeros and light actions and the spindles aren't compatible .
Not willing to go tubular but will keep an eye out for a set of wheels . Mine are still working well so not sure will spring for that yet .

Ya could lose a lot of weight switching to a 54 cm R5 frame . Can you provide more details on the big ring ? What's he model called?

Normally the cheapest place is the ass. If your under 10% body fat then start looking at components.
put the fun between your legs
back to the wrong sized frame you should sell the '09 and get a smaller one with the proceeds and the money you want to spend to shed weight. I can't imagine the S2 handling well with an 80mm stem. Must be twitchy like a TT bike.
