Chip/Delam in Carbon Braking Surface - ZIPP 808
Moderator: robbosmans
I have bought a second hand Zipp 808 front wheel.
I have found the tinniest crack/delam in the braking surface.
It is all of 3/4 mm long and you can fit your finger nail in it. it is pretty much on the top corner of the rim - so I guess the owner must have hit something.
Do you think it will be safe to ride? in my mind the whole rim is 88mm deep so there is lots of carbon for stresses to redistribute - that said - you hear so many scary stories.....
I cannot work out to attach pics - but I do have some!

A little while ago I did something similar, stone to FC 303. Big chip [think pinky finger nail size] out of the brake track. Went to the LBS, a Zipp dealer. "just ride it", cosmetic only. Concerned it would give the bump, bump braking affect. We use a PPG product called Ceramic Clear activated it with hardener then built it up with a brush, shaved the excess of.............. all good. You really have to look for it to see it. Like my LBS said "just ride it"

At the very least epoxy it back together! (and clamp it while the epoxy sets).
Updated: Racing again! Thought this was unlikely! Eventually, I may even have a decent race!

Any advice on epoxies and where they can be bought?
What about sending a mail to some company like Berk Composites and ask advice?
