Hi, new to the forum but have been eyeing weight weenies for a long time. I prefer steel and have always built pretty mid range bikes both in weight and quality (ie 853, ox platinum, sram rival, thomson, ck wheels etc). I recently acquired a Salsa Primero which is True Temper S3 and comes in at about 3 pounds and am looking forward to build it up as light as i can within my budget. So far i just have the frame and wheels (DT swiss Mon Chasseral's - 1450 grams). Cant afford to hit the crazy light weights a lot of you get on here but I would be VERY happy with sub-16.

Problem is my budget, I am willing to spend decent money and willing to buy used, I just cant afford the bike boutiques. Definitely get excited about getting a deal on components that are light, durable, and reasonably priced. Hard to find, but here is a couple examples of the type of components im looking for:

Nashbar full carbon Fork - $140 - 350 grams
http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10 ... _511634_-1

Planet x Brakes - $110 - 205 grams
http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/BCPXULCNC/ ... e-calipers

If i could find deals like this on each component I think id be up and running for the spring. Shifters and derailleurs are def going to be Sram Force. I am open to generic or china brands if they are reliable. Finding a light and cheap crankset (not BB30) would be amazing!

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated!

For the stem, look for the Kalloy ASA 105 - 120 mm = 120 g. ~$15-$30 depending on seller. There's a whole thread on here about them.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/Cycling-/7294/i ... kw=asa+105

I found an aluminum Control Tech handle bar for ~$30 on amazon that was 250 g (though was claimed at 235 g for a 42 cm version)
http://www.amazon.com/Control-Tech-Ergo ... B00BV3X084

(these are $50 and 190g, though they're 3T knockoffs. I'm sure you could find similar unbranded ones for the same/less money)

Theres a cheap carbon setback seatpost that had a claimed weight of 150g... mine came in at 115g. $75

I'll save this in my financially secure dreams file along with a custom S3 Waterford ; )

thanks! these look like great options it seems, especially the stem. Do you think the 3T knockoff bars are safe? I'm going to try to find the brandless versions

The handlebars are probably fine but for that price you can get some nicer bars used that weight just a tiny bit more. I got an almost ritchey WCS bars for $30 on ebay. They weight like 230g. You can look into light skewers (pretty cheap way to save 40g).

SRAM red exogram crank is probably one of the lightest budget cranks I can think of. Check out fairwheelbikes crank review to get an idea of other options (which cost much more).

If you're going to stick with your current wheels, tubes are also a good spot to shed grams, try Conti Supersonic tubes. Latex tubes are good too, they weigh slightly more but ride much better. Pair with Vittoria Open Corsa SL/CX (or veloflex) tyres or Conti GP4000s if you're concerned about durability.
I write the weightweenies blog, hope you like it :)

Disclosure: I'm sponsored by Velocite, but I do give my honest opinion about them (I'm endorsed to race their bikes, not say nice things about them)

Thanks I think the ritchey bars look good and it seems like a lot of ritchey components come up on ebay pretty regularly. I would like to match the stem and seatpost, bars would be nice too. Still open to any cheap suggestions for those. The sram exogram looks good I'll keep an eye out for a used pair but might be a little high as far as price goes for me. Here's what I have so far.

Have:
Salsa Primero Frame - 47cm compact - 1360g?
Chris King Headset - 98g
DT Swiss Mon Chasseral wheelset - 1450g
Schwalbe Ultremo R.1 - 700 x 23c - 180g x 2 - 360g
Panaracer R’air Tubes - 700 x 18-23c Presta 32mm - 65g x 2 - 130g
Selle SLR saddle - 225g?
Speedplay zero pedals - 206g

Going to buy:
Nashbar Full Carbon Fork - $140 - 350g
Planet x cnc Brakeset - $140 - 205g
SRAM force 10sp shifters (used)
SRAM force 10sp long reach rear DR (used)

Unsure of:
Ritchey stem (used) or kalloy uno (new)
Ritchey seatpost (used) or woodman carbon
Ritchey handlebars (used) or generic carbon (new)

Have no idea with the parts below,, any cheap suggestions would be awesome!

crankset/bb (non bb30)
Skewers
Lighter headset?
Chainring (single 110bcd, 42t)
Cassette 10sp 11-30
Chain 10sp

I am running a 1X10 drive train, I tried it out a few years back and never went back it just works for me.

Forgetting anything?

for chain, definitely KMC SL, about 220g. Skewers you can find a lot for $40 in the 40g range, china made of course. If you want "brand" but still asia made look for KCNC or Far and Near but there are many more.
