I wonder if super-wide flance spacing on front hubs isn't counter productive by putting the spokes further out in the wind as a tradeoff for stiffness gains not needed on front wheels.

Might be but my Alchemy wheels with wide flange spacing are not slowing me down (I am slowing me down) and the wide hubs are very very appreciated when cornering hard. It was a noticeable dfference for me. Lighter riders might not be so impressed.
