number of teeth of big ring must be an even number, narrow wide teeth are mandatory

Ask the SRAM front mech development team.

Good point, guess for sram going 1x was easier than making a front mech that worked. How long before single speed makes a come back

you are not thinking ahead...

with disc brakes soon going pro.. 135mm rear hub spacing leads to 12-13 speed cassettes. at the point single speed makes takes over the market.

It's less about something wrong and more about the upsides for people who don't need the extra gear or three(not including overlapping gears) or tighter spacing afforded by a double.

Weight, aerodynamics, simplicity, maintenance, etc...

Are they all small benefits? Sure, but even if you choose not to take them, why care if others do?

And I thought the added width would be spent on the disc :noidea:
That's not to say 12x will never happen.

I'm already running a 1x11 road setup. SRAM CX1 with 46T chainring, Ultegra Di2 GS RD, Ultegra 11-32 cassette. When the SRAM XG1190 11-36 cassette makes it to the UK, I may try one of those (something like a 120g saving, and a lower bottom gear).

Running a 1x10 setup since two weeks with 46 CX1 chainring, 11-23 cassette and Force22 derailleur.
Loving it! It's perfect for the flats!
All gears on one hand and without having to think about shifting the front.

Not sure what I change when going to the alps or ardennes, but that happens max. 2 times a year.
Did I already say that I love it? :D

The fact ther is no Red 1 tells us something maybe. That it is good for cx, triathlon, criterium but not suitable for serious road racing.

sorry i have a 1x10 , due to reasons :
- save some money buying S700 hydro brake/shifters instead of RED22 and

- to use the bike in every climb i found in my rides i MUST have 11-36 cogs

(it's available the Force1 - CX1 11-36 cassette with 11 speeds, but only nowadays and not when i started my project)

You can race with a fixed bike if you want, no problem. The question is why not a Red 1? I suppose because it is not a groupset for top level racing. If you have another answer we'd like to hear it.
