Chinese Clincher- Choice

Simnorm, they are standard 20 front 24 rear. Surprised I've had no flex problems or other issues at the weight I am or the weight they are.

Just a quick update for those interested in the above carbon rims from Yishunbike (ordered via Asian Cycle Express).

Order placed for 1 x 38mm clincher rim (WU3C) for the front and 1 x 50mm clincher rim (WU5C) for the rear on 11th April. Total cost including shipping to the UK was $384.12 USD. Both rims arrived just over 2 weeks later on 28th April (couple days delay due to a customs charge of around £30 GBP).

I built them up over the weekend using a Bitex RAF10 front hub, Shimano Dura Ace 9000 rear hub and Sapim CX Ray spokes. Laced up as 20 spokes radial at the front and 24 spokes 2x rear.

Have only ridden 35 mile training ride and a 10 mile TT with them so too early to report on durability but so far I'm very pleased. They roll well, aren't affected by crosswinds and the 25mm width shapes the tyres well and allow lower pressure, hence comfier ride. Braking is also better than I expected, using Swissstop Black Prince pads. So far only ridden in the dry, but I don't plan to be riding these wheels in the wet if I can help it.

My only real complaint at the moment is that I could have gone deeper! Being a light rider (63kg) I was concerned about deep aero rims in windy conditions. Having now ridden these (F 38mm / R 50mm) in moderate wind I found they were very well behaved. I've had more trouble with 30mm deep V Shimano alloy rims than these.

Weight for the built wheels was 660g front, 900g rear = 1560g total (including Velox cloth rim tape). Total cost around £560 GBP.

Thanks for sharing slashdotdash - I currently have a compelte set of 50mm with a 38mm additional for the front because I was concerned with cross wind behavior.

I may just go with two 50mms.

Very similar experience with the Yishun. Same setup of 38f/50r on 20 radialfront 24 2x rear but on CK hubs. Surprised how well they ride, brake and handle winds. I'll say that I'm starting to realize they handle cross wind better than Pacenti Sl23s or ENVE classic rims.

I wouldn't go deeper because the 38/50 is a killer combo that eats up anything you through at it.

I am currently trying to decide between a pair of Yishun WU5C rims or a pair of Light-Bicycle rims consisting of a RRU45C02 front and a RRU55C02 rear. I plan to lace them up with Sapim CX-Ray spokes on WI T11 hubs. Are there other good rim choices available?

Vivian from light-bicycle provided me with cross sections of the RRU45C02 and the RRU55C02.

Looks like they got rid of a lot of the bead hook. Not sure how I feel about that for full pressure road tires. It's fine for low pressure cx tires.

Vivian at Light-Bicycles says that they can come without hooks but that most people choose with hooks.

I guess that would make the inner width 17mm which is what mine are.

I am leaning pretty heavily towards Light Bicycle's RRU45C02 and/or RRU55C02 over the Yishun wheels because Light Bicycle claims to use 240 degree TG resin and Yishun uses 210 degree TG resin.
The next question is do I go 45mm + 55mm or just 55mm for both? The expected weight of the wheelset will be 1519g for 45+55 or 1569g for both having the 55mm depth. (To be built with WI T11 and cx-ray spokes)

The only issue I have with my Carbon-Cycle 45mm + 50mm wide-u rims is that the braking surfaces on the 45 are not parallel around the whole rim so the front brake pulses quite a lot. The rear is fine.

Braking power is better than I was expecting with Black Prince pads. Even in the wet.

I am astonished how they handle in strong and gusty wind conditions. I think they're more stable than a set of Kinlin xr-300s. Very impressed.

I forgot to mention that I live in the foothills of the Rockies in Calgary. It gets very windy here and we have lots of climbs and descents, though not crazy steep and long like in Europe or California. How much more aero would 55mm be over 45mm? If going with 55/55 is only a small gain going from 45/55 or 45/45 then perhaps I should pick 45/45 to get the best of both worlds? A little less weight but nearly the same aerodynamics? These are questions though as I have no data. Even searching for Zipp 303 vs 404 isn't yielding much data.

I decided to go for 2x55mm in part for aesthetics and in part because they will still be lighter than my current set of 2012 Wiliams System 30x wheels. Next decision: WI T11 hub set or Tune Mag170 and Mig70. ~$92 more for 98g less, though I haven't factored in shipping yet.
