Hi, I'm new to road cycling and have just got some SPD SL pedals. I have found a shoe that fits well (sidi level) but am stuck if to get a black or white shoe, not keen on the neon colours. From reading on the Internet I have come across comments like "you have to be pro to wear white", "black shoes are for mountain bikes" etc.
I was thinking more towards black as white might become dirty quick, but would black be to hot in the summer? I just wondered what people generally wear.
Thanks

People generally wear the color they think looks the coolest. I'm a fan of black.

Pick the colour you like best - as long as it's white.
Get a bicycle. You will certainly not regret it, if you live.

I'm all about white shoes / white helmet :)

Black saddle / black bar tape ... until spring, then white bar tape.

Moving white shoes are more visible than black against the road. Anything that makes you more visible / less likely to wind up on the hood of a car is a win in my book.

Im with this ^^ and this ^!

White shoes and helmet, always. I just think it looks classy.
Black saddle and black bartape, and in spring I keep with black bartape!

Whether white scientifically stands out more than any other colour, I am unsure. But, its a nice ideal and something i'll go with. The Missus tends to find some solace in me wearing white and trying to do the right thing in terms of visibility.

Thanks for the replies.
White seems a more sensible option from the comments written and I think it will be a better colour for the summer!!

On the other hand, white degrades the fastest. A shoe consists of different materials and all degrade and discolor in different way. Black is less vulnerable for degration. Shiny surface is also more sensitive for scratches but easier to clean from dirt.

White is for the "good guys".
Black is for the ruffians.

But I will say that my white Specialized S-works shoes have held up amazingly well: no fading, discoloring, or cracking.
I always try to choose a white or brightly colored helmet for visibility and safety. It is also probably slightly cooler in direct sunlight.

A good reason to change your shoes at least every 2 years.

White shoes show dirt.

I'm not sure how much cooler they are in summer. Most of the heat is radiated from the hot blacktop. Most white shoes have black soles. However the white upper should reduce absorption of radiated energy from the sun.

Black matches all kits.

I've got black shoes and white and black helmets.

Decided to go black. Seen a few pairs of white sidi's that have become discoloured on the plastic bits. Thanks for your answers :)

White is the only choice. Unless you go with a nice shiny silver pair, like shimano did in the mid 90s when Gianni Bugno was sporting their shoes!

I can confirm Sidi's white plastic parts yellowing with time and it's pretty difficult to get them back to "white white" colour.
