What kind of geometry/fit are you looking for. First response given to these kind of questions will always be to get fit. That way you know what geometry will work best for you.

Lots of good options for your budget. Not sure how exchange rate and pricing works where you are, but I would take a look at a Felt F5, Cannonade CAAD10, maybe a Cervelo R2 if you can stretch your budget. Canyon bikes is also another good alternative that would work with your budget. Also, it is worth checking out used bikes as you can usually get good deals on a bike that is still in great condition but maybe 1-3 years old.

'Best' depends on a lot of things unfortunately! If you want carbon or alloy, new or second hand, not forgetting fit & geometry(probably the most important, as 53x12 said).

If you want new and carbon, Planet X have some fantastic deals on whole bikes, the RT-57 with Sram Force 22 at £999.99 jumps out at me as a bit of a steal. But if you are looking for the best frame with upgrade potential, I would probably buy something like a second hand Cannondale Supersix Evo, although that obviously comes with more risks.

If you don't mind aluminium, Cannondale CAAD 10's are really popular on here, same goes for the Canyon Ultimate AL's.

eBay
Craigslist
WW marketplace
Local UK cycling forums

Those are some options to begin looking at for a used bike.

Look on eBay, BikeRadar classifieds, LFGSS classifieds, etc.

It all depends on what you can find, really. Just wait and jump on the right bargain.

AL is your best bet at that budget for a new bike. Canyon or Kinesis Aithen I reckon.

If your budget stretches, this is ready to go w/out upgrades as a ww bike.

If you're ok to go used, you can probably find a good deal on a Scott Addict.

Look for a used aluminum bike with rival on it for the cheapest you can find. Buy a set of light wheels and tires for it, and enjoy. If you have $ left over, look at upgrading bars/stem/seatpost, and crankset.

Re the Canyon/ Ribble/ P-X thing...

Worth noting that Canyon are a far more desirable brand than the other two.

Note also that Canyon sponsor top pro teams and have had top pro riders smashing up the peloton on their alu frames

Nothing against the other two, which are great VFM, but not really in the same class ...
