I've been staring at high-res pictures of these for a few days. It looks like the brake cable is just that, a normal brake cable that comes out of the hydraulic shifter. The compatible disc-brakes don't look like they take any component of the hydraulics. Which leads me to think, would these hydraulic shifters work with rim brakes? It's definitely not the same as disc brakes, but having hydraulics on long, steep descent would save my hands from going raw grabbing for dear life.

Are you suggesting Sram HydroR rim brakes? I presume it would work, as long as the fittings on the hydraulic hose were correct.

Shimano hydro and Sram hydro are not cross compatible. Shimano uses mineral oil whereas Sram uses DOT 5.1

Even if they could be used with rim brakes you'd still have issues. What rims & callipers are you currently using?

I didn't realize hydraulic brakes were actually hoses, thought it was just a normal brake cable.

I'm running Ultegra rim brakes and Zipp 202 tubulars at the moment.

Try Swissstop Black Prince. Also how close do you run the pads?

Black Princes void Zipp warranty so be careful on that one.

I run them about 3mm from the wheel. I actually have issues with the rear wheel locking up when I grab the levers hard i.e. a kid walks out in front of me. True story, happened to me 3 times last week. It's terrifying.

Is there a noticeable difference running Black Prince over the Zipp Tangente pads?
