Mine was tricky initially also, but I succeeded after a while. Try to search for it with the Garmin after just after performing a shift. If this doesn't work then I think what solved it for me was performing the search after just having re-installed the Di2 battery, or the connector to the D-fly. I think it only pairs for a limited amount of time after a shift (wakes it from sleep) or power up.

Dredging up an older thread to ask:
Has anyone tried mounting the D-Fly in a location other than the DS chainstay and found a location where it did not work? Mostly interested in internal mounting locations and paired to a Garmin.
