does anyone no where to buy a di2 10 speed rear mech ,looked everywhere online,or have shimano stopped doing them ?
if so do I really need one? I have 10 speed di2 shifters,10 speed front mech, the crankset is actually an 11 speed the e tube is the newer 3 port with usb interface, and 10 speed cassette, what would happen if I replaced the 10 speed rear mech with the newer 11 speed one would everything work or could I do some kind of firmware update??

If you want to run an 11 speed rear derailleur with your current setup. DO NOT update firmware or else it will not work. Otherwise it will just plug straight in and work fine.

use E tube software without a working wi fi connection.

donwload ths software version , 2.6.0

http://e-tubeproject.shimano.com/downlo ... _2_5_2.zip

There is a compatibility issue with Shimano e-Tube software version v2.6.0 that prevents 10-speed front derailleurs (FD-6770) from working with 11-speed rear derailleurs (RD-6870) and 11-speed front derailleurs (FD-6870) from working with 10-speed rear derailleurs (RD-6770).

DO NOT UPDATE FIRMWARE using Shimano e-Tube software v2.6.0 if you are running an FD-6770 front derailleur and a RD-6870 11-speed rear derailleur, or a FD-6870 with a RD-6770

If you plug in an 11speed rear derailleur, it will shift to 11 positions. If you plug in a 10speed rear derailleur, it will shift to 10 positions. This is true with any di2 shifter attached to them.

I believe this to be correct. You can lock out the 11th shift with the limit screw, however, and the spacing difference at each cog is negligible enough that it is supposed to shift ok. There are several used 6770 rear derailleurs on ebay at the moment. If you upgrade beyond the firmware discussed above you'll not be able to use a 6770 fd with a 6870 rd

It appears that the 6770 rear derailleurs are out of stock everywhere-Performance lists them at $339, but who knows whether they have them. Given that Wiggle has 6870 rear mechs for $169, you might want to find a way to use one. It would suck if Shimano orphaned all of the 6870 users out there.

I have update from a mechanic who claimed that 2.8.1 is working with 6770 hardware and 6870 derailleurs. He is 100% sure about this. In this case he said he updated the firmware for someone who wanted to use 6770 shifters, cables, ext battery, junction box set up but 6870 front and rear derailleurs.

I don't think that was ever an issue-the issue was using a 6870 rd with a 6770 fd or vice versa. The derailleurs need to both be from the same generation with 2.6 and later. There never was a problem with using the other components.

The firmware issue is an example of shimano being pricks and stopping people changing just the rear mech to convert 6770 groups to 11 speed...
