In the case of eight notch cartridge BBs - whether lockring or cup/adapter - were these all MTB? (I know that six notches appeared on Dura-Ace BB-7700).

Thanks.

Are you talking about Shimano Octalink? They all have eight splines. 7700 used Octalink.

There's V1 and V2 which look similar but are not compatible. Check Sheldon Brown's pages.

Yeah - old style ISIS and Octalink cartridge bottom brackets.

I thought Dura-Ace BB-7700 had a 6 notch DS cup/adapter, and a 6 notch lockring on the NDS.

I would like to know if all the ISIS/Octalink cartridge BBs using 8 notch fittings were MTB only and not road.

American Classic ISIS bottom bracket for road used an 8-notch tool. So does my Kult ISIS road BB.

"octalink" sort of gives the game away

From memory only DA was adjustable so thats why it had the lockring.
MTB- i'm guessing the axle was a different length

Octalink applies to the eight splines on the axle; not the eight notches that might (or might not) be on the cup/adapter or lockring.
