I think the Altum just looks right - I like the ESX but some of the tube profiles just looked wrong.

As someone who needs a high front end I like Parlees solution with the Top Cap.

I want to like the Altum, but I don't know if I can get over the hump at the head tube. I'll reserve final judgement until I see it in the flesh.

the hump isn't quite as large as the ESX. i can live with this one, and not the ESX.

That 'hump' hides a fabulously simple bit of engineering - change the head tube length with a simple topcap swap. In reality it looks a little like that found on the Venge, but Specialized missed the chance to implement this 'flex-fit' design.

But I don't need to change the length of the head tube (which is already too long) as much as I need my bike to be good looking.

If anyone wants to switch I would be happy to take a small Z5SLi at a bargain price as a redundant technology.

Not a fan of the hunchback look. Give me a carbon lugged Parlee and I'll call it a day.

ghisallo2003 - as much as it pains me to say, it's not all about you! Parlee produced this concept to lower production costs and streamline their manufacturing overheads. It just happens to make it faster for customers to get a bike and cheaper for stores to stock (as they don't need to carry inventory in various HT lengths). In turn this should make it a more attractive brand to more stores, providing customers with more locations to buy from and Parlee with greater economies of scale. Maybe the price will even come down. One day.

The other thing is: sometimes people need to ride a taller or shorter headtube - injuries or increased flexibility. This design makes that not only possible, but simple and doesn't alter the amount of spacers one can use on top of the HT.

I can't help but wonder if any of the people here carping on the look of this frame (and the ESX) have actually ever ridden one (clearly not the Altum, but the ESX)?

jason at Fairwheel has built and rides an ESX. i'm curious to hear the difference between the ESX and this Altum.

A bike must appeal to me from all aspects: performance and aesthetics, and most, if not all of us on this board, will agree to this this at some level.
So it may ride beautifully (as I'm sure it does), but if pains me to look at it every time I take it out for a ride, it's not going to be the best experience for my money.
