How much am I supposed to apply to the seatpost?

I just lift the seat post at the clamp about 2" and put on the paste, and set it back down again, I do not apply the whole seatpost, or reach in the frame etc. because is I think as some of the compound is gone overtime the little bits of sand can drop into the frame.

Less is more kind of thing, is this right?

Well, you need enough to coat it. I use a thin coat on as much of the seat post as I think contacts the frame. (you can shine a light down the seat tube to see).
