Would it work with a set up of an outer 50 teeth round Rotor ring go with an inner 34
Q-ring chainset or it has to be either all round or all Q-ring setup in order for it to work smoothly?

For what it's worth - have run a standard Q ring inner with a QXL ring outer, no issues. I'd imagine that you'd be fine mixing no-Q and Q-rings given that you can alter the positions on these things substantially.

Never tried it, but the actual oval on the inner ring is very slight compared to the outer ring due to the size. Don't see why it wouldn't work just fine.

From my experience, shifting is better with a round outer than a full Q setup.

Any info on the noQ outer and Q inner rings combination? I have been wondering about this kind of combo, but would like to hear people who have tried it

You guys should take a loot at Lennard Zinn's tech FAQ column archives on the Velonews website. He had one recently that discussed exactly this setup (Q inner ring, round outer ring). He had apparently been running it on his cyclocross bike for a season or 2 with good success.

My two cents echo that the outer ring is the one that has the biggest effect on shifting, so sticking with round outer will avoid many of the Q ring related setup problems (difficulty setting proper front derailleur height primarily, and slightly increased risk of throwing the chain off when shifting to the small ring).

I personally have not ridden with this combo, so I can't help but wonder about how I might like/dislike the different "feel" switching between round/Q tons of times throughout a ride, but the people who have used the combo don't seem to have any problem with it.

Anyone tried outer QXL (53) with a round 39 inner?

From the comments it seems like it'll be ok? Looking at this combo for my TT rig.

If it's for your TT bike I'd go larger than 53...

It's a QXL, so happy to try the 53 for now. It's the equivalent of a 57 through the power phase, so could be enough.

One day, when I'm a strong boy, I might graduate up a tooth.

No need to quote above.

It's more to do with getting a clean chainline to the cassette. Go to a 54, seriously. I only put out around 260w on a 10 and 54 Osymmetric on an 11-23 is a great fit (100rpm).

I already appreciate the clean chain line, thanks.
