I'm hoping for a bit of technical advice please. I want to run an 11 speed Ultegra 6800 chain set with the rest of an Ultegra 10 speed group and would like to find out if anybody is running this combination and if it's all working ok?
I can't really see why it wouldn't work - the chain rings are the same distance apart and the roller width of the chain is the same for both speeds - but it's a lot of cash to lay out to find it's an issue.
Any help much appreciated.

yes but it's recommended to an run a 11 speed chain as well. This is already well documented and used by many people I know.

thanks dmoneysworks. I thought chain was usually matched to the cassette (which will be 10 speed) not to the chain set?

I just rode 2 mountainous cyclosportives (170 kms/3200 + and 140 kms / 2700 +) with a 6800 crank and a 7800 group :

6800 crank 11s and the rest 7800 10s including the chain.

I just changed the crank because I needed a compact and it worked perfectly (in fact better because my 7800 chainrings have 17000 kms).

the 11s speed chain is narrower so I don"t know if it would work with a 10s cassette.

What about vice versa: 6700 crank and all other stuff 6800 (6870)?

Should be fine as well.....I have run 11s on a 10s crank without an appreciable difference in performance. That being said I rarely exit the big ring so I can't speak for the shifting too much, but when I did shift it worked.

The internal width of an 11s chain is the same as 10s, and the external width is a bit less(0.1 mm if memory serves me right). So no issues with 11s chain meshing with the 10s cassette and rings. The ring spacing is less on Shimano 11s cranks, so 11s chain is ideal. However I don't think it will work that bad with a 10s chain.
I remember someone testing a DA 9000 chain on an otherwise 7900 group and mentioning an improvement in shifting.

No, 5800 is 4 arm crankset, while 6700 is 5 arm crankset.

I've used 11 speed crankset (FC-5800) with 10 speed groupset (5700). It worked fine.
Chainrings are not compatible between 5800 and 6700 cranksets.

Apparently one speed up is ok...one down less so.
