Cracked Campagnolo Titanium Cassette carrier
Moderator: robbosmans
Has anyone ever seen this? Campagnolo 21-23-25 titanium joined cogs off a 11-25 Record cassette. I gave it a good cleaning yesterday and discovered the cracked cassette interface. Do you think this would hold up after it is torqued down or is it now a paperweight?
Paperweight, unless you want it to fail when you're cranking out of the saddle on a 15% grade, causing you to smash your gonads on the top tube.

Sadly it's a paperweight.
Yours is the first reported case that I've seen with Campy 11-speed in what, over 5 years now?
There's a thread discussing similar issues with Shimano DA 11-speed too.
Although some or most of those issues seem to involve big guys putting down a lot of torque in the low gears.

There's sometimes a buggy.
How many drivers does a buggy have?
One.
So let's just say I'm drivin' this buggy...
and if you fix your attitude you can ride along with me.

OP just for the record, how big and powerful are you? It turned out that the first Shimano poster was an ex track sprinter.
Just asking.

I hate to admit it, I am a fit 55 year old 155 lb rider who does lots of miles but have never owned a power meter so cannot comment on power. Draw your own conclusions.

What's with the scarring/pitting in four places around the surface? In the closeup it looks pretty nasty. Were you missing a spacer? If not, what did the spacer look like? Those teeth look pretty worn too - how old / how many miles on it? Had you ever serviced it before? When I cleaned my Chorus cassette for the first time after being built, one of the spacers came apart into three pieces in my hand, shop warrantied it. Said Campy told them the torque on the lockring was supposed to be 15 nm instead of the 40 (?) stamped on it. This makes me curious if it's an over-torqued issue. The crack and the scars make it look like it was really mashed.
Edit - sorry, I realize now that there is no spacer at the 25 cog.

If you can't warrant it I would try giving it as zap with a TIG welder.
Less torque more loctite on the aluminum lockring if you ask me.

Max Gravity, unfairly treated by gravity!
Personally I wouldn't bother welding this given it's a part-worn cassette. Campag might warranty it, and even if they don't, it looks as though you got some distance out of the cassette. Certainly don't ride it. Talk to your friendly LBS, then if they can't help, buy another and move on.

looks overtorqued. the small pitted marks around the contact surface look uneven and dug into.
