Calfee said the stays only needed to be wrapped. In fact, I got an email this morning that the repairs are already complete. Shimano also warrantied me a new RD, albeit in the stainless finish.
There are two spokes on the wheel that are bent, but it's otherwise OK. I'll have the spokes replaced and that'll be that.

Were you running the derailleur in its stock configuration, or did you try using pulley wheels with more teeth, a la madcow, and with similar results?
