I recently bought a 2009 Specialized Tarmac SL. Bike came full Dura Ace 7800 aside fom FSA SLK light crank and Ultegra 6700 pedals. The seat post and handle bars were not original. They were Cannondale C3 from a CAAD10. Seller claimed a weight of 5,900 grams

Bike did not come with wheels or a cassette. I purchased Vuelta Corsa Super Lite wheels (1500 grams) a Selle Italia SL kit saddle (235 grams) and a Ultegra 6700 cassette (209 grams).

I plan to use this bike for racing and training and want it to be as light and fast as possible within a budget. The seat post and bars can definitely use an upgrade, as could the crank. I saw a guy on Craigslist selling a Dura Ace 7900 crankset for 300, will this be compatible with 7800? Have also been looking around for bars and seat posts. Have yet to purchase tires

Any other areas where I can shed weight?

I am in the U.S, if it matters

Great bike i used to have a Tarmac SL and it is a great bike. It will not weigh 5.9kg though. Nowhere near. The 7900 crank is compatible with the 7800 group but what is the bottom bracket you have in the frame at present. It is a OSBB(BB30) frame, which means it is likely a BB30 SLK crank. If you want to run a 7900 crank you will likely need to install adapters and the i would say you will gain weight over the current crank.

Replacing the bars and stem with lighter items, and as you bought the whole bike from someone else, there is a reasonable chance you will need a different stem length. A new seatpost would definately drop weight. Seatpost choices would depend on setback/no setback. Wiggle has a 3T sale on at the moment. Ritchey superlogic seatpost tuned with a ti bolt is a superlight setback seatpost option. KCNC ti skewers weigh 44 grams and cost 60 US. Conti supersonic tubes cut 100g over normal butyl tubes. If you want to replace the crank i would go for a BB30 crank, the s works crank can be found cheap on ebay, a hollowgram is a good option if keen to get a powermeter, as you can easily swap out the NDS crankarm for a stages.

Thanks for the reply. I meant the seller said it was 5,900 grams as is. Weight will increase when wheels, etc are added. Is keeping the bike 7,300 grams or below a reasonable goal?

Not sure on bottem bracket, how would I go about finding that out? Forgive my ignorance

Ah, don't think I'll get a 7900 crank in that case. I can grab a used 7800 off EBay for 100 bucks

So the Tarmac SL comes with an OSBB (which is specialized version of PF30) It is designed to accomodate BB30 cranks. A BB30 crank has a 30mm axle diameter and a 68mm spindle width. If the Kforce is a BB30 crank when looking down at the crank you should see the frame end, no external cups, a very small space, maybe with a wave washer or shim, and then the crank arm. A dura-ace crank (7900, 7800, whatever or any GXP crank for that matter) has a 24mm spindle diameter with a 86mm spindle width. As the bottom bracket is about 61mm on a tarmac sl there will be 86-61 = 2.5cm/2 = 1.25cm on either side of BB shell before a shimano crankarm starts. This space is filled with an adaptor.

I am not sure your reasons for wanting to upgrade the K force crank, I also do not hold FSA cranks in high regard but I would get a BB30 crank, as adaptors can cause a lot of creaking, and if your goal is to shave weight a 7800 crank + adaptor will weigh >100g more than the K force + BB30 bearings.

Once again i would advise a hollowgram or a s works crank. I have over 25,000K on my S works cranks, no creaking, stiff, light and looks good and can be found on ebay for cheap.

I'm not saying I am 100% correct, but I do not believe the Tarmac SL had the OSBB. That frame is too old for that. I believe they started that with the SL2.

It is not a k-force crank. It's the lower tier SLK group

Nice, how much did it cost to black the bike out? That's something I'd definitely be interested in

The current handle bars on the bike weigh 320 grams, the seat-post weights 296. How much weight can I save on replacements with a budget of roughly 300 American?

I did it all with 2"x10' strip of 3M 680 "C" black reflective tape. Lots left over. $16 on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/3M-SCOTCHLITE-6 ... 1088617156

I recommend a paper-cutter for getting good straight lines. If you're handy with a razor and a straight-edge, that would be fine. I went with 2x10 to get me what I needed for covering up the logos on the downtube. 3M claims 8 year exterior life. This stuff is used on things like trucks, trains, military vehicles.

I also just added this 99gram goodie to my build, for $35:

On the high side of my budget, worth the cash?

No, unless you want elliptical chainrings specifically.

$250 in the marketplace atm - and you could probably find them on ebay for ~$200

Just got the wheels and cassette put on the bike and weighed it. It's 18 pounds (8,164 grams), target weight is 16.5 pounds (7,485 grams). Other than the obvious seatpost, saddle, handlebars, and crankset, where can I cut some grams?

BTW, pedals are Ultegra 6700

Also have a Lemond Tourmalet, 853 steel, roughy 9,340 grams, I'd like to get it to 8,600. Currently running Mavic CXP22s, SRAM Force with Rival brakes and a Red cassette, FSA SLK crank, Weyless fork, cane creek stem, Ritchey WCS bars and seatpost, Selle Italia SL Kit Carbonio flow saddle, Shimano R540 peddles.

The first upgrade to drop weight is to get rid of the boat anchor wheelset. Any ideas for the fork, crankset, and stem?

Also, can anyone help me to identify what year Force the bike has?
