I was out riding my summerbike for the first time yesterday, and I noticed that the chain or dereailleur was behaving a bit weird. It's a bit difficult to explain, but it felt and sounded like when a gear is skipping, although it wasn't. It came with every second pedal rev, and just gave a slight bump in the chain.

I can't seem to find a stiff link in the chain, and I'm pretty sure the derailleur is adjusted correctly.

I'm wondering if it's because the chain is too short. I recently went from 50/34 to 52/36 chainrings. Could that be the reason?

Any other things to look at? The chainringbolts should be tight enough as well as the crank itself.

Worn cogs/chainrings? Compatibility issues, maybe?

Probably a damaged or worn quicklink. this happened to me and my quicklink was about to go pop! replaced it and it was all ok!

I actually just fitted a new KMC Missinglink for 11 speed(I ride SRAM Red 22).

Couple of things. First if it happens in big-big crosschaining it might be the chain is too short and the derailleur wants to shift down the cassette.
Second, you shouldn't change the missing-link mid chain life. The idea is the missing-link and chain will age and stretch together. If you install a new one on an old chain its pins having started stretching yet it will be shorter than every other link in the chain and can cause a clunk every revolution. http://sheldonbrown.com/chains.html

I would put on a new, corrrectly sized chain first, they cost what $30-40? if that doesn't work I would look at the following.

Third, have you checked the derailleur cable tension, is the cable housing "gummed up" if it hasn't been used in a while, is the derailleur hanger straight, was something leaning up against it over the winter?

could be a dumb question but you never know....

Did you take the chain off and put it back around a guide in the rear mech? :noidea:
Seen it done often enough..

Fitted a new Shimano chain, and the skipping disappeared. Interesting to see if the new Shimano chain will shift alright with the worn Red cassette.
