Hi I have recently made the leap over to electronic gears and I must say they are absolutly amazing and have no regrets!

The question is should I purchase the Shimano PCE1 PC Interface Device?

Currently I have no need for double/triple shifting or moving my buttons around etc.. but I am concerned about the firmware updates as currently I am not sure which is installed and my local shop dont offer this service either.

Is it really worth it?

Thanks

No need to quote a direct reply

You can move your buttons around, upgrade firmware, or change the multishift options without the PCE1. The only thing the PCE1 offers over the regular SM-BCR2 is the ability to diagnose issues.

Plug the SM-BCR2 in to your SM-EW90-A (or B) and then plug it in to a PC with the E-Tube Software. You can upgrade firmware, make changes, etc. The only option that will be greyed out is the ability to diagnose issues.

Correct, as long as the op has the internal battery and the BCR2. If he has the external battery and charger (BCR1) its pretty much the same price for a new BCR2 as it is for the PCE1. I agree that the diagnostic function isn't worth the cash alone, and if the op is happy with the current operation of the system, I doubt firmware updates alone would justify the cost. Whit some the cool stuff likely to come in the future with the wireless ant+ stuff, it might be worth revisiting.

Great! - thanks for the advice much appreciated, tbh I hadn't heard of the SM-BCR2 as I have an external battery (Cervelo S5), I like the idea of the internal battery as well anyone know if it can be fitted to the S5?

There are some posts on the Cervelo forum about this, it apparently will fit in the seat tube, but not the post itself. You'll need the battery, the charger, and the front junction if you don't already have the new style with the port for the charger.

Ah, I had just assumed all 9070 was internal. My Ultegra 6870 11speed did not come with an option for an external battery.

I have read of people installing internal battery in a Cervelo S series. However, they installed it in the seat tube instead of the seat post. And they all came up with homemade rigs to do so. This is not hard to do. My BMC has a proprietary seatpost shape, so I had to manufacture something to get the internal battery to hold.

This is correct. You will need the front junction SM-EW90-A or B. A is the three port junction, B is the five port. A should be fine unless you are running several of the optional shifters. The shifters themselves have extra ports for your climbing pod or sprint shifters. If you are running aero bar end shifters then you will need the 5 port.

You will need the SM-BCR2 and SM-BTR2 which are the new style battery and charger. If you want the bottom junction inside as well, then you will need the SM-JC41.

Perfect just the information I needed , will let you know how I get on, had a good look in the seat post stem and there does appear to be room for the round battery and got a few ideas for some designs so will post some pictures once complete!

Thanks again for your help
