Considering a Specialized allez e5 smartweld

Looking for a bike that can serve as commuter and winter riding bike- I am not concerned about commuter racks so the commuting part is a non-issue

What I am concerned about is fit, they offer a 49cm and a 52cm, the 49 has a TT of 518 and the 52 has 537. I know my max reach with a 100mm stem is about 532 so leaning towards the 49.

This bike would replace my steel all city commuter bike, with the carbon fork on the specialized I think it would be as smooth of a ride as my current steelie.

The main reason I am looking to change is that I tend to do my big rides after work so need a bike inexpensive enough to lockup in the bike locker room and performance oriented enough for after work spirited rides

Anyone have comments on the Allez or specifically sizing on these frames?

Edit- Didnt think they made a 49 allez but it seems you just cant get a frame!

I have ridden a tarmac in a 52 abit and it was a great bike, perhaps not as stiff as a caad10 but certainly a good aluminum race frame. The spec 49cm geo is great also, I have a tarmac in that configuration and it handles great.

I dont think they make a 49cm allez; or at least its not listed on the US website for the frame.

I also didn't think so but my dealer confirmed. it basically has the same geo as the 52 aside from TT and ST

Great bike. Several teams where I live have gone to this frame for racing crits instead of carbon frames.

After further research, cannondale has a caad10 in a 50 which will fit perfect.

Perfect since I will be commuting and want something low key

I tend to agree with ^^^.

Hell of a frame to lock up and drag through the mud. You can do performance on any bike.

My wife has had a couple 49 Tarmacs, including an S-works SL2 and a 2014 Pro. They've been great in that size. Reasonable geometry and a good ride. The Allez has very similar geometry, so I'd predict it would handle well. Some smaller sized bikes get really wonky with the STA and HTA.
