I like downtube shifters, but nowdays I need STI/brakeshifters for racing.

I prefer the 8spd groupset (74xx) if we are talking about Shimano. I hate the octalink, so I skipped the 7700 series.

I don't like the shape of the 8spd/early 9spd Campa brifters... so if I choose Campy, I'd go with 9/10spd. (Veloce? Chorus? Record? I know the Campy line, but don't know the REAL differences.)

And what about the new SRAM stuff? For example, I'm interested in Force 22...

If it is a retro build to preserve some historical elegance, then probably one of the Campy groups.

If you just want what really shifted the smoothest and best: DA 7800

But 7800 is not all that "retro". I am riding it right now on my winter bike: a Look KG76

In 1998 with Record and Chorus 9 speed they started the round knob on top Ergo levers. Before that the Ergo levers had pointy tops. Ergo has had this round knob on top shape ever since. I have Veloce, Chorus, Record Ergo shifters. They all shift well. No difference. For ego, weight, appearance, get Record-Chorus-Athena-Centaur-Veloce-Mirage. But for functionality, it makes no difference which you choose.

I'd prefer 10spd... What's the difference between the older 10spd Record/Chorus? And the new Centaur/Veloce? Older Chorus or newer Centaur...?

Yup. Ugly and heavy but comfortable, reliable and shifting was really fantastic. 6600 was good stuff.

The Mavic SSC groupset that Kelly rode (before they introduced that awful flying saucer chainset) pictures here: http://hilarystone.com/groupsets.html. Campag knock-off (wasn't everything back then), but quality sealed bearings, good finish and serviceability.

"Very late 2010" is 2011. Like my 2007 car, which I actually took delivery of in March of 2006. Lol
It's an easy check however, to see which chainrings it has. Just something to keep in mind should he be looking that way. And the stiffer spring in the rear derailleur was a "running change"... I don't think they even created a new part number for it.

Granted. I have a 12/98 car and it's an MY99. So, I do understand. Nevertheless, it is possible to get the black and white 2010 SR with all the good bits and no red. That said, I don't think the lighter shifting of 2008/9 is anything to be avoided. It's actually rather nice, especially when you're on the rivet, tired as all hell and have nearly nothing left in the hands to change gear.

People twrite of the nice light shifting of Shimano 9000 and all I can say is this: welcome to Campagnolo 2008/9...

Early Record ErgoPowers with the solid forged brake lever and aluminum body are just unbeatable if it's class we're talking about. Something like that just won't ever happen again. 1992 Record was aluminum porn at its best.

A Superbe Pro with Command Shifters wouldn't hurt either. Or a 1992 Mavic SSC. Or even a 1993 Mavic ZAP.
