I have Shimano 105 Shifters (5700) with a CX70 front derailleur. I'm used to the new SRAM Red front shifting and I find this Shimano setup lacking. Are there other FDs that would improve this setup, like a 7800 or 7900, or would a larger upgrade be in order?

You could just use a sram red yaw 10 speed fd with that. You can also maximize shifting by making sure the fd cable is as friction free as possible.

I wondered about that, thanks. Is there a 10 speed Force Yaw FD? Or was that only introduced with 11 speed?

There is not a Force yaw FD for 10 speed. The 11 speed cage is a reportedly narrower, so it probably won't work well.

OK. Now I just have to decide if I want to sink any money in to it when I could just spend a bit more and get a SRAM Force 22 mini-groupset (less calipers and crank). There seems to be a lot of year end deals out there.

What is the trouble with your 105/CX70 combo?

I have used exactly this setup on my previous cyclocross bike with fantastic shifting. What chainrings do you use?

I'm not happy with how long it takes the 50 ring to fully catch. If I shift it 75%, small pause, then shift the last 25% - it's great. If I do it all one one sweep it is less than great.

I'm using a SRAM XGlide rings on a Red spider. It came with a boat anchor FSA Omega crank with FSA rings, but I didn't care for it. Since I have a SRAM Red Quarq on my other bike, and I may use it on this bike if I travel, I wanted to use a similar crank to minimize the FD changes if I moved the power meter over. FWIW: It's a BB30 frame.

This is loads better than with the FSA rings, but it's not quite as good as I'm used to.

Since I have small hands, I'm starting to wonder if it's related to the lever's throw length. I haven't measured it, but the SRAM Red (2012) feels like a shorter throw.

Maybe try a 6800 FD.

I thought 6800 had a different pull ratio and wasn't compatible?
