I went riding this weekend with a guy who's just bought a 510, and I aprticularly liked the elevation readout, similar to below;

I do however strongly dislike the size and form factor, and much prefer my 200.

Is such functionality available on the 500?

I have a 500, and I don't even know.
:oops: I have never wanted to see the profile during the ride.
But I know you can see the profile after the ride by uploading to Garmin connect, or Training Center, or Golden Cheetah, etc.

The idea is to see progress during an ascent etc.

It's possible, but you have to make a course using something like mapmyrides.com and then load the file into the Garmin. It is pretty primitive compared to what you saw on your friends, but you can follow progress on a particular course.

I use bikeroutetoaster.com currently, which is the same as he uses.

So this is possible on a 500? Has someone got a screenshot?

It is definately possible to display the profile of the course, although the last time I had a discussion with a member about it, dunno who it was and I don't know who was right or wrong. As far as I know, and please correct me if I am wrong, the profile you see on-screen is the profile based on the position your virtual partner, based on the average speed of that virtual partner. That means that you do not see the profile in real-time. It is possible to alter the average speed of the virtual partner on the Garmin, but only percentage-wise. Kind of hard to explain this in English as a non-native speaker btw :oops:

Screenshot of the profile screen in the left corner, but it's a profile without too much elavation. The boxes in this screen containing text and numbers are not customizable.
