my stock bike comes with 6700 calipers. My friend is selling his brand new 6800 caliper for USD150. Is this consider a brake performance upgrade? or just keep the $$$ for 7900, 9000? sorry no budget for eebrake.

it's an upgrade, but not huge. Admittedly, I have not used 6800, but Shimano claims a 10% improvement in braking. I don't personally consider that to be a huge gain, especially given that the brakes are around the same weight (it's also a bit of a nebulous term. 10% improvement in what?). The principal design change is going from a single pivot to a dual pivot. if your brakes work well, go with a good upgrade, to something lighter, or more powerful. This is, in my opinion, barely an incremental step.

also, that price isn't great, considering you can get them brand new for $140 and probably less, if you shop around a little.

Uhm, both 6700 and 6800 are dual pivot, or did I misread you there?

High-jacking the thread a bit, are the 6800 substantially smaller in outer dimensions, as in narrower frontal area, more petite appearance than the 6700? They look that way, but I can't find any decent pictures that would showcase the difference, if there is any?

6700 isn't a true dual pivot. 6700 uses the attaching bolt as the second pivot, whereas 6800 has two dedicated pivots, where the attaching bolt only attaches the brake to the bike.

The 6800 brakes have more power and better modulation than the 6700's.

Just like the 9000 brakes, the 6800 have a roller between the two arms that they pivot against, giving a very solid, smooth feel.

finally i have changed from 6700 to 7900 without paying a premium price. For a brand new set of 7900 only for USD180 and managed to se my 6700 for 70 so i need to top up another 110. result? almost the same but i managed to reduce another 30g.
