Thanks to this thread I went with the sram 11 speed red cassette on my di2 9070. Shifts perfect.

Probably lasts longer too due to the steel cogs. I only wish SRAM offered a 12-28.

Shame on Shimano for not labeling the updated version CS-9001.

Anyhow, I haven't seen the most important attribute, from a WW perspective, of the updated version mentioned: How much does it weigh, and specifically, how much more, if any, does it weigh than the original version of CS-9000, on a like for like basis (e.g., old and new both 12-25).

I just installed a new 6800 cassette and chain. I have had creaking when under power in the three large cogs. I was wondering if anybody has had this issue with the 6800 stuff. I am not so concerned with catastrophic failure as the carrier is aluminum, but creaks really annoy me. I have a Force22 cassette that I will throw on when I get home to do some troubleshooting.

I called Shimano USA about it to see if they have had any issues. He essentially rattled off a laundry list of ways to prevent drivetrain noise (replace chain, cassette, etc. even though I told him the whole setup had less than 300 miles) and then insinuated that I called only because I saw the article about the 9000 stuff on bikerumor. Anyway, he was insistent that they have seen no issues with 6800 and all products are tested thoroughly.

Anybody seen creaks with 6800?

Same here. New bike, 9070, but SRAM cassettes (Force & Red). I may need to test a bit more (got the bike yesterday), but initially it seems to be better than the 7970 it replaced (all Shimano)

The response from Shimano is honestly kind of insulting. 'Oh yeah there's no issue here we just saw an opportunity to improve our already perfect design. You should be thanking us! Also you customers are all super dumb and can't tell where the creak is coming from so it's probably not our fault'

This is where the sheer pursuit of grams at the expense of performance and durability becomes self-defeating. I'll stick with my Ultegra 6800 which doesn't have the carbon.

I've had no problems with my 6800 cassette yet. My 9000 creaks like the knees of a 92 year old marathon runner. I have called and emailed canyon in German a few times and they have finally agreed to send me a new 9000 cassette. Hoping the new one won't will only be seen and not heard.

Here's some answers to some questions above. Sorry, I'm on my phone so individual quoting is hard.

The weight difference - I believe I posted that a few pages back. It was negligible.

Creaky 6800 - I have yet to see this on a customers bike or on my own. All quiet on that front.

As a followup on the 6800 creak. I changed my chain lube and retorqued the cassette. I put 106 hilly miles on the cassette today: silence. I am satisfied.

How many rivets does the 6800 cassette have? Has there been a redesign on the 6800 cassette as well?

The difference between the 9000 (old) design and the 6800 design is the number of legs on the spider. The 9000 has 4 legs with 4 rivets (now 8). The Ultegra cassette uses 6 legs and 6 rivets. The load is spread amongst more legs, reducing the overall stress.

What about the inner carbon piece that people said were cracking/failing?

It was why I went with SRAM XG-1190 with Steathrings. At the tune of about $100 premium over the Shimano.

But, they have worked incredibly well, very quiet with my Di2 9070 setup.

6-8 months later, I now see the price has dropped a lot on the Sram XG-1190, no sense going with Shimano unless there is a specific gearing they don't have you really need.

Sad, because I was strictly a DuraAce cassette guys for years, ran SRAM everything else. Now the reverse..haha.
