I've tried searching your forums but can't seem to find any concrete evidence if....

.... a Shimano 9000 crank will work with a 10 sp Di2 set up?

I've read posts where some have, but it's not clear if a 10 sp or 11 sp chain is used and whether front shifting is in any way compromised as a result...?

Shimano say it doesn't work but they sure would say that...

Thanks

It's in here.

But can confirm, yes it works fine. I have my 9000 SRM on my 10sp Di2 bike - no worries.

Yes, my mate is currently running a DA9000 crankset with a 10 speed 105 groupset (filthy, I know. He has been instructed to upgrade to full DA9000 ASAP).

Works totally fine.

Yes, and you can use the 11-speed chain if you want.

Works fine. 11 speed or 10 speed chain, no issues.

So will the 11 speed chain work fine on the 10 speed cassette and chainset?

Thanks all for confirming.

Meanwhile I get this comment from Shimano:

...because the chains have other dimensions, the function is not optimized. Our groupsets are system engineered which means optimized to work with each other as one. Since there are differences between 10 and 11 speed parts we do not advice to mix parts.

The 11 speed chain is the same inner width as the 10 speed chain.

The outside width is narrower;

Meaning you can use the 11 speed chain on 10 speed equipment, but not a 10 speed chain, on 11 speed equipment.

If that makes sense!

Which translated into non-marketing hype means we don't recommend it because we don't make as much money. I am running DA 9000 front derailleur and chain with FSA K-Force SRM, DA 7900 shifters, rear derailleur, and Ultegra 6700 cassette with no issues on the wife and my TCR Advanceds.

Very useful info there, thanks. So you're saying if you have a 11 sp crank, using a 10 sp cassette & derailleur you still need to use a 11 sp chain, correct?

As long as the rear end is 10 speed *either* 10 or 11 speed chain will work. If you'd gone 11 speed back and 10 speed front, only an 11 speed would work. Its the rear cluster that is the important one. FWIW, lots of people run 10 speed chains on 9 speed MTB set ups.

They've been saying similar since we took the leap from 6 to 7 speed drivelines, it was (mostly) rubbish then. Most of the kit works together. Just not at 100%, sometimes the difference isn't even noticeable (and sometimes, mix n match works better!)

I run a 7900 SRM on my 9000 race bike.

Again, it's fine. In fact, most Pro's were doing it this year.

:)

No, if you have an 11sp crank, and a 10 speed cassette and rear mech, you can use either.

It is only the presence of an 11 speed cassette that forces you to use an 11 speed chain.

However, my very trusted friend and ultra-mega-bike-tech researcher and parts spreadsheet creating cyber-nerd mechanic at my LBS who has been trained at the Shimano HQ in Osaka tells me that running a 10 speed chain on an 11 speed cassette works fine. He also added that as the 10 speed chain stretches, the system doesn't function exactly perfectly, but still for most people they will not notice and it will be fine.

Haha, exactly.
