Anyone try Shimano 9000 cables with 7900 groupset?

I did. It smoothens the shifting on 7900 but don't expect it to turn into 9000.
I installed 9000 shift and brake cables on my Ultegra 6700 (everything is internally routed) and it makes my bike shift and brake much, much better. I would say now my 6700 works better than Dua Ace 7800. I have never used 9000. Before using 9000 cables on my 6700, I would say the 6700 was always just a little off on the shifting and the brake power while good, was not nearly as strong as it is now.

I have also put new 9000 cables on my other bike with 7800. The improvement is lesser than on 7900, perhaps its cable routing are more direct.
I was using Gore RideOn Professional shift and brake cables but recently switched to DA 9000 shift cables with a drive train with FSA K-Force SRM, DA FD-9000, DA RD-7900, and Ultegra CS-6700 cassette. Although there was a very slight improvement in rear shifting, front was noticeably easier but the spacing on the SRM rings requires very close derailleur setup. The most noticeable difference was in braking with the 9000 cables, DA 7900 brakes, and Zipp 303 Firecrest clinchers - most notably brake lever feel - which is now very light and smooth. Note that the 'feel' may also be due to issues with Gore Ride On brake cables as it has been my experience that the Teflon coating will flake off over time clogging the liners thus degrading performance.

are the brake cables PTFE coated as well?
