CAAD10 headset servicing
Moderator: robbosmans
Just got a few q's about my CAAD10's headset...
Firstly, I have a 2011 CAAD10, anyone have any idea what headset it comes with as standard?
Specifically what kinda headset is it, as in I know its internal as opposed to external, but is it semi integrated or whatever?
How do I go about servicing the headset and what tools make the job easier?
...and yeah, Ive checked park tools website and it didn't really make it much clearer as to what kinda headset my caad actually has, so wastn much help in teaching myself how to service it!
thanks!!!

Nothing special about it. Remove them, clean the races and headset parts. Check that the bearings spin smoothly then grease and re-pack it all.

Integrated headsets are just a pair of cheap sealed bearings. Not really designed to be serviced, but people have been known to pry off the seals and try to flush them out and repack. problem is, if the bearing's rough this won't help much. The lower bearing is the one that gets the road water and grime, and will usually need to be replaced whereas the upper should last for ever. If it feels smooth, just put it back with plenty of grease, if not replace.

They drop out. Fingers only are all that is needed. If you have never worked on a threadless integrated headset before, it's not difficult, but you do need to understand how it all works.
An angled bearing housing sits in an angled cup in the frame.
After putting everything together, a fair amount of tension is required on the top cap to hold everything together, before the stem bolts are tightened.
I should add that unless there is a problem with your headset, I'd suggest you leave it alone. Is there a problem?

Old grease that's hardened up a bit could hold them. Unless they have been subject to severe conditions and there is corrosion holding them, yes you should be able to pull a bearing out of it's cup by hand. Are they corroded?
And yes, I have experience.
