I'm thinking of buying an Orbea Orca frame, but I have read that it's made specifically for Gore Ride-On cables, as the cable runs along the downtube.

But then I read that these cables have been discontinued - so what would an alternative be?

Too bad they discontinued them as they are my favorite. I am sure there is another brand that will work as it doesn't make sense to market a high zoot frame that can only take one type. But I suspect that you can still get the Gore cables at some stores if you search. Get a couple sets and you're good for as long as the bike lasts.

can't see why it'd only take ride-on, there's nothing special in terms of size etc. about them

fwiw i had some when i first got sram red, the coating shed, jammed in the liner and they started sticking, imho any decent uncoated cable will be better

Apparantly the coating on the cables prevent it from fretting the frame.

If it is true, then by principle alone I would never buy a frame designed specifically around a particular cable set.

One of the main reasons I passed on an Orca frame. The newer ones have this problem sorted out, if I remember correctly.

What year is the Orca that you are looking at? I've got a 2009 and have used both Shimano and Jagwire cables/housing. Never had any issues that I was aware of.

if there's an issue with the frame being vulnerable to cable rub, you could use powercordz, i switched to them, excellent shifting plus you save some weight

I saw this on a frame the other day. Conceivably, you could use a cable liner such as one for Nokon housings (Jagwire makes an L3 substitute for Nokon, for example) that would span the bare sections, connecting to nosed end caps. I haven't tried it, but it SHOULD work...

Cool. As this is a brand new frame ordered from Orbea, I guess it shouldn't have this problem.

Sram is now bringing the gore cables to the market. your LBS should be able to order them.

Glad to hear that Sram is going to be supplying them so I can continue to buy replacements in the future for my Gore specific Orbea Terra frame. That said, I am not a fan of this setup. The sharp bend at the seat tube/top tube junction (which is what requires the Gore liner setup) adds too much friction for my liking. I have both the Terra as well as my Tarmac (with a conventional cable system) setup with full Ultegra 6700 and the difference in shifting between the two is night and day, with the Orbea requiring FAR more force at the lever.

+1 on what Frankie - B said. when i got my 2013 RED groupset.. it came with GORE cables.

As a former mechanic lf 18 years, I can tell you that gore cables were one of the biggest marketing scams of all time in the bicycle component world. There was absolutely no difference between new standard cables and Gore brand cables/housing. and the liner would frequently tear off of the cable and cause trouble. If you need a fully sealed system, just use standard cables inside full length plastic liners. That's really the only advantage that the Gore system had in terms of resisting infection of dirt and water into the cable system.
