+1 on checking lockring - same thing happened to me. Was quite alarmed when I discovered it, but sure enough, there was a stress crack/fracture. Thankful the crank bolt kept the spider on the spindle good enough nothing catastrophic happened. The lockring was the original silver one with splines all around it. I replaced it with the lower-profile 4-spline PF30 compatible one and the crank has been dead silent ever since.
