Long shot...

Just picked up a Focus Izalco Max in the AG2R paint and was planning to strip it to carbon and get clear coated.

Has anyone stripped an Izalco before? I'm curious about the quality of the carbon layup beneath - is there loads of filler or voids?

Thanks

thinking about the same for my izalco max 00 frameset.
its already clear-coated ud-carbon, but with several logos on it.
hard to say how it would look stripped, but ud looks never absolutely homogen.
probably wont help much, nevertheless a picture of my ud-clear:

you can make the pics bigger by double-clicking those.

Thanks for posting those. I didn't realise it was logos on the UD with the stock frameset.

I'm still a little anxious what they may have hidden beneath all the paint on mine. Don't want to spend the hours stripping it if it has to be completely painted again.

It's your bike of course, but I wouldn't do it, I think it looks absolutely AWESOME just as it is right now...

@iamalex: no, i completely modified the headset and use an extralite utrastar expander. the original headset was an acros "the clamp".
@Kaboom: Thanks a lot! Yes, i am not unhappy at all with its current appearance, and its just an idea to "refresh" the bike, after already 4 seasons in use (....and i would like to keep it for some more years). but with very high probability, i will follow your advice and leave it in its current state.

I'd always say if you like how a frame rides but want an upgrade/refresh and don't want to paint it, just get some new kit for it. eg. shiny new groupset, shiny new wheels, shiny new cockpit etc. etc.
Nice bike by the way :D

I love my Izalco Max - they are great frames.
Do you really not like the AG2R colours? In Australia, one of the domestic teams has them as standard issue and the riders have really make them look nice. Here is an example....

Looks fast that one.
I don't have a huge issue with the paint. A few reasons for changing; Wanting to make it my own. Wanting a quieter look. To appreciate the material itself - I'm fascinated by the process of layup schedules, types of carbon fibre and resins. Much like I appreciated the tube shapes and welding on my old titanium or aluminium frames.

The finish inside the frame is pretty neat, which is encouraging.

Ahh I see. Yeah, that makes sense.
Hard to know really, I don't think I've ever seen a custom painted Izalco. Maybe send an email to some customer painters? If they have had some through their shop they might be able to tell you...

Remove logos. They aren't paying you to advertise for them.
