Velobuild R-016 Weight and Review

500km review:

Weight:
Frame 985g (including 4x bottle cage bolts and rear derailleur hanger)
Fork 375g uncut
Total Build: 8.3kg

Build and Finish: 8/10
Very good and I can’t fault the quality from a price point of view. My 55cm BSA UD carbon frame came with a matte black finish giving the overall bike an understated look. I didn’t experience any issues with building the bike; the rear derailleur hanger was well aligned, bottom bracket threads were true, and the front braze on only need a little tightening with an Allen Key. The components used for the build consisted of a mix of Shimano 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace taken directly from my old DengFu FM004. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the internal cable plugs can be removed with an Allen key rather than simply riveted on as with some frames. I haven’t noticed any appreciable lack of shifting accuracy between the R-016 and my old externally cabled FM004. However, I do miss having a cable barrel adjuster on the down tube and this made rear derailleur adjustment on the fly possible for those unusually hot or cold days.
Ride & Handling: 7.5/10
My first foray in determining the ride and handling was to perform a bottom bracket flex test; this is where you stand beside the bike, apply both brakes and push down on one of the crank arms. On my old 2008 DengFu FM004, there was a visible amount of flex in the bottom bracket. On the R-016 the flex is almost zero with any movement most likely due to the limitations of the ageing BSA design. I’d be very interested to see this test repeated on an R-016 with the newer BB30.
The other test I performed was to flex the rear stays to determine their stiffness. On my old FM004 the stiffness of the back end was like wet pasta. However on a positive note, this did contribute to the overall comfort of the frame. The R-016 has near to zero flex despite the narrowness of the stays. I initially thought this would equate to a harsh ride. However, road vibration and bumps are handled very well and long sessions on the bike aren’t a problem.
I have been using the bike for commutes into work and weekend rides. When seated on the bike, there is a noticeable increase in power transfer between my old FM004 and the R-016; particularly on stop-starts and short sprints. The R-016 does reward you when standing up on the bike on steep climbs and ascents; the beefy bottom bracket comes into play and transfers the power to the back wheel. Also, I have noticed that I use the 53t cog on my Ultegra cranks much more often and this tells me the R-016 has contributed in some way to increasing my power efficiency overall. It handles descents much better than the FM004 and the front end is stiff enough to tackle sharp corners.
Conclusion: 8/10
The R-016 is an improvement on the earlier Chinese carbon frames however it is not a quantum leap forward. If I have learnt anything from the frame upgrade, it is that the 2008 circa DengFu frames were quite good to begin with. The R-016 does benefit from the 300g reduction in weight and the beefy bottom bracket makes climbs easier. However, I do think that the frame has shown up the limitations my 2500g group set and 1800g wheel set. Therefore, it is possible that my review of the R-016 is hamstrung in this regard. I would be interested in hearing anyone’s experiences on the R-016 using higher components.

Pros:
Inexpensive
Simple, high quality internal cabling – Di2 and mech ready
Great build and finish
Good power transfer + stiffness

Cons:
These days a 985g frame and 375g fork can’t really be considered “superlight”

has anyone ordered a wheels mfg replacement hanger for their 066?

can anyone confirm that #148 is the correct piece? looks spot on from comparing my stock one but id like to be sure so i don't have to send it back and deal with that nonsense

FWIW (not much), that is the part I ordered for my FM166 (disc-brake version of 066). They at wheels mfg also suggested/confirmed that this looked right from the photos I sent. I have not mounted it yet, though; I just bent the original (soft!) hanger back into place and that has worked fine so far.

The parts that hold the saddle rail is a bit wider than it should be, on my FM066SL frameset. Thats why they don't stay horizontal but with some angle.
Is this normal? Anyone have the same issue?

i haven't had that problem but you could try holding it straight with a spanner while you tighten it up

Doesn't change anything.
I goes back to this again afterwards.

If the saddle is in the position you want, why does it matter?

So interested in these bikes, but as the norm is- hesitant on the carbon quality. I have found another site (velo build) but can't figure out why they can offer such similar frames for roughly 1/3 the price of Hong-fu. Any new updates to rider feedback or reviews?

I have been reading here and on RBR about open mold frame. Since i prefer a higher handlebar, i am interested into the R-027 from Velobuild.

Someone bought this frame? If not, someone found another one with a headtube longer than 160-170mm for a 56cm frame?

Thanks!

Hey,

i'm thinking about buying a chinese frame.
At the moment the choice would be between the following:
* Velobuildmall: VB-R-016
* Dengfu: FM-066
* Dengfu: FM-069

What frame would be the better one.
From the weight size it seems that FM-069 is the better one -> around: 928 gram for a 58
Any advice is appriciated.
Does anyone know the prices of the frames.
I found some information, but i want to know the prices before i contact the manyfacturer.

Thanks in advance.

FM066 and FM069 are really different than each other on geometry wise.
Even FM069 is lighther, fitting was a big problem for me, so I bought FM066...

I don't belive that they ride too different than each other, so you should consider the fitting more...
