Hi,

I'm in a real dilemma, choosing between either the Bontrager Aeolus D3 3 or 5 wheelset for an Emonda SLR build. Having previously used a D3 5 before, I'm undecided if I should get 3, being 15 mm shallower. I ride a real variety of terrain, from flat to lumpy and also do road racing and occasional crits.

Anyone had experience of using both or suggest which of the two would be a better option, for the Emonda SLR specifically.

Thanks

You would be fine with either.. the 50's will be a bit more laterally stiffer.

At a slight weight penalty?

Are you saying overall, whatever the terrain may be, either 35's or 50's will do just fine? It seems, the Trek Factory Racing team mainly run 50's, more so than 35's?

I have an Emonda SLR project one build in process. I went with the Aeolus 3s.

Have Zipp 404 firecrests on the current bike. Don't particularly care for the spin up effort or being blown around in windy conditions. Will be sticking with sub 40mm rim profiles going forward.

Optically, I prefer the shallower profile of the 3s as well.

I put 3's on my wifes madone.. I've ridden her bike enough times fine tuning the build and testing brakes. I like the 3's very much.. also have a rear 7.. bike looks good with 3's for sure. With her only being 100lbs, I don't want her to get blown around either.

Thanks, some interesting observations here.

Given the Emonda SLR is more of a lightweight and high stiffness bike, not designed with any aero considerations in mind (Madone 7), the bike would perhaps would more appropriate with 3's, rather than 5's - anyone agree?

In terms of spin up, I'm guess the 3's take less effort to rotate as opposed to 5's?

Thanks

3's will look better for non aero, spin up faster but not that much, either will work but if your out front road or Crit aero might be advantageous
