Numb! Please suggest a WW saddle with cutout to help me.

The older I get the more I find my 'area' going numb while riding. This is especially noticeable during the winter when I am on my indoor trainer and not getting out of the saddle much. While on my trainer, if I go 10/10ths for even 10 minutes I go numb.

I am using a Specialized Toupe 143mm (Ti rails) and I find it reasonably comfortable aside from the numb bit. The saddle 'fit tool' at my LBS said the 143mm was correct but since I am 6' 2" perhaps I need something wider to place more weight on my sit bones? I also have to think that a larger saddle center cutout would be beneficial since the cutout in the Toupe really doesn't feel like it takes away a noticeable amount of pressure vs a flat saddle. My Toupe saddle is set with a very slight nose-down angle...should I tilt it down more or am I just on the wrong saddle? At this point I am looking for any WW solution that might help!

The three saddles on my list at the moment are:

Specialized Romin Pro 155mm (167g)
Selle Italia SLR Tekno Flow 131mm with a big cutout (115g)
Selle Italia SLR Super Slow 145mm. Looks comfy but it is heavy. (195g)

Does anyone have any experience with these saddles?

Anyone in the same boat as me that has found a solution?

Hi,

Anyone in the same boat as me that has found a solution?

Not so sure about a solution.
It's an individual thing which could or could not be solved by proper fitting.
What is a crying shame however is that this problem, which to my mind falls into the professional hazard category even when it's not necessarily professionally induced, is all too often reduced to something that's just in your mind. Be that by your partner, your doctor or the general public at large.
To them it just can't be.

In reality however vessels do get compressed for hours in a row, nerves do go numb and your life suffers. For some reason beyond me most medical care services do not seem to take this as a serious dysfunction. It is.

That being said, I hear a good amount of praise about SMP saddles. Cutouts in saddles just don't work for me. Never heard of anyone claiming these did work for them but it's not entirely impossible.

Ciao, ;)

I can give my current experience that I have just gone thru. I rode a toupe 143 expert was really happy with it for about a year and I didn't have any numb issues but I did develop some pressure on some sensitive parts. I am currently dealing with some prostatitis and I changed my saddle over to the selle italia slr 145 and I love it. Rode today 30 miles and did not have any issues. I can truly say that I prefer the selle italia over the toupe. Just my 2 cents

I had the same issues with pain and numbness and changed first to a Romin Evo 143mm and it got better but not perfect. Changed to the Romin Evo Pro 143mm and really liked it but I decided to try the Evo Pro 155mm, even the popo meter called for 143mm. I'm very happy I gave it a try since the 155mm Evo Pro really made all the difference and I can now go for a 130 mile ride and I have no pain or numbness at all.

Great feedback! Sort of echoes what Frankie13 said.

Can someone explain the real difference between the Romin Pro and the Romin Evo Pro? Based on the website info the Pro is a bit heavier and appears to have more padding but I can't tell if the cutout is the same size or not?!?!? I would prefer to go with the Pro 155 model (not Evo) but ultimately I need to stop the numbness so...

I use a Selle SMP Full Carbon. 120 g on my scales.
Head over to Steve Hogg to read about fit and such.

At 70-72kg depending on the time of year I am all round comfortable on my 76g Saevid Carbon Composite on my road bike including rides 6-7hrs long....

As many say though it is each to their own...

If I remember correctly from Specialized store: The Romin Evo has wider cut out and narrower nose than the regular Romin. I was measured 143 according the assometer, but I read at this forum, RBR, Slowtwitch that a lot of people recommended to scale up to next size for Romin Evo; thats why I am using 155, and it is perfect for me. The numbness I got from Fizik Aliante, Antares, and Arione disappeared immediately. I have 2 version the Ti and Pro with the carbon rail, the pro "feels" more comfortable and stiffer for me which is good.

I also have the Ti railed and carbon railed romin evo's and agree the pro is more comfortable. I thought it was just in my head! They are very angle sensitive though. My 143 evo pro weighed about 167 grams.

76g, 298€, 85kg rider limit

78g, 144€, 95kg rider limit (road)

113g, $129, no rider limit that I know of.
http://www.velocite-bikes.com/velocite-scs-carbon-saddle.html

I went with the Velocite. I'm well within the weight limit of the other two, but the reassurance of it not having a weight limit clinched it for me. The significantly cheaper price was also a bonus.

111g on my scales, and I find it extremely comfortable. The shell flexes a lot, which makes me think that the leaf-spring thing at the back actually works (I was pretty skeptical initially).

The Romin Evo Pro has more padding and the nose is a little more narrow. Like I said before, going up a size is what I recommend as well. What does every little bit of weight saved do you good if your boys are not happy?
