Nice wheels, but the pricing is off. They're advertised at 2479 euros, "reduced" from 2599.

The prices of the components are:
- Rims 719 x 2 = 1438 euros
- Hubs 399 + 149 = 548 euros
- CX rays 2.60 x 44 = 115 euros
- Total = 2101 euros.

So, with the "reduced" price they're charging 378 euros simply to build them (or 498 euros, when not "reduced").

As much as I like Bike24 that strikes me as being more than a little excessive.

Hi,

I don't think the shop has anything to do with it. Aren't those wheels a true ax-lightness product ?
That's how it reads from the description on the Bike24 site.

Ciao, ;)

I think you're a total resource of information when it comes to Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturing sources, products, and so forth, but where is this comment coming from?
The wheels are AX Lightness - not their "Engage" line.
Rims? AX Lightness - made in Germany
Hubs? Extralite - made in Italy
Spokes? CX Ray

So may I ask what your comment is about?

(this is regardless of the "trust" a person may have in AX Lightness's product qualities or failures, that's for another long-pending topic.)

The prices aren't quite right. This set is built with the SPM front hub which is a little more expensive than the SX. Extralite does not usually sell the SPM aftermarket but we have been able to get a few in the past, but have paid a little more for it.

Also the rims are not the standard Ax24 rims. The regular Ax 24 rim is claimed at 215 grams, but generally falls closer to 220-225 grams per rim. The rims in the Ultra set shown are a different rim that weigh in around 195grams each.

Hi,

Spokes? CX Ray

Wot? You do not know where these are made?

And, BTW, you can't just make a breakdown of material costs etc. that way. That's not how it works out.

Ciao, ;)

Nothing really.

I was having a beer, bored and being a dick.

It was supposed to be a witty retort to another post but it was just dickish.

Really? Why not? I'm not being facetious, it's a serious question.

I stand corrected on the actual specs, but (assuming they were the same hubs and rims) I fail to see why you couldn't source each constituent component, then add the costs of a decent wheel builder to arrive at a final cost.

What am I missing?

Yes, you're absolutely right. They are: http://ax-lightness.de/en/cycling/bike-components/wheelsets/ultra/

My mistake.

Hi,

Well that would probably work for a wheelbuilder making a custom set or small series of wheels.
A manufacturer OTOH buys in much larger quantities of components so the profit margin is just not the same as you need also a budget for marketing etc.
I'm just speaking in general....not being Ax-lightness's beancounter or something.

Ciao, ;)
