Just wondering what the standard is for getting the recognized weight of a bike. Do you do it with everything? Pedals and cages?

Sorry if this is covered somewhere else. I tried a search but couldn't find it.

For italian manufacturers: catalog weight = actual weight of a size 48 with no pedals and cage -5%

You are not allowed to ask how much weights red italian bike the same way you are not allowed to ask age of pretty girl you have just met.
Manufacturer claimed weight is usually without padals, cages and size small. Some manufacturers can be way off that, not necessarily Italians.

That's completely up to you.

I would say: with pedals, cages and computer, but without bottles, saddle bag, pump etc.

When people on the forum are saying their bike is something like 14 lbs what are they typically basing that on?

Seems like bike weights are like golf scores.

If you have to unscrew it, you weight it.....

According to the UCI:

"The minimum weight of the bicycle (in working order) shall be 6.800 kg, considered without on-board accessories
in place, that is to say those items that may be removed during the event."

So as btompkins pointed out, if you need to screw it on, you need to include it in the weight - pedals, bottle cages, etc. I personally exclude the computer.

Thanks guys. I'm building my first WW type bike for climbing and the six gap century. Although it won't be anywhere near as light as others I still want to know how it stacks up. Apples to apples.

My view: No computer or mount, zero or one cage, no bolts for the missing cage(s).

The computer is separate: an accessory like a tool bag, not part of the bike.

Obviously include pedals.

For me the weight given should be the way you ride it. When I weight my bike I weight with pedals (try riding without them), cages and computor is I use one on that bike. I also weight again with full water bottle and tool bottle packed with I normally take.
The later weight is the way I ride it and therefore it is the important weight.

I could make my bike quite alot lighter by removing bolts, computor, cages e.t.c. I don't ride it that way though.

I ignore manufacters weights as with all statisitcs it will depend on the details. Unless numbers that cannot be compared.

In brief , manufacturers weights are not worth to recognize them.
