Anyone ride one? Does the channel really do anything? I would imagine that the padding on the outside of it would just compress when you sat on it and just increase chafing.

I've heard that's why the Versus X was created, the regular Versus did compress and the channel relief wasn't as dramatic as they'd hoped. I haven't experienced that and I'm pleased with it.
I had the Arione VSX and have the Antares Versus. I prefer the Antares' shape.
I will upgrade to the X when it's time for a new saddle.

O have both versions of the Antares. I prefer the VS. There's just enough difference for me.

Depends how much you have that needs to sit down in the channel.
Basically I need to replace my Arione and I'm wondering if giving the Versus a try is even worth it. I don't have any issues with my Arione, but that is not to say that the Versus wouldn't be better.

I have the Aliante VS X and have to say it's the best saddle I've ridden but quite heavy. The channel doesn't compress and is the only saddle I can do 8-10 hours in with no numbness or pain.
I've got Arione varients on all my bikes- a couple of R1's, an R3 and an older generic Arione- I thought I'd nailed my saddle choice.
Then I spent last week in Provence on a hire bike riding an Arione VS, and now I'm back I've ordered two (the only two available, one braided carbon rails the other the K:ium) to do some back to back testing- if that bears out my thoughts about the hire bike then I'll be selling all of my conventional Arione saddles.
TL:DR- the channel works for me, stops me hopping around on the saddle and allows me to centre myself with no discomfort.

I have been struggling for a long time to get my butt and cojones comfoortable on a seat and it wan't untill I had bike fitting and a proper saddle selected.
Currently, I have Arione VS on Kium rails and I couldn't be happier with it even though it's not a feather-light saddle

Only if you first find a person with exactly the same rear end as yours, you have something to discuss about.
Now everyone here in this topic speaks about their own "end" . . . .
If possible try to find a dealer in your location (or internet) that has test saddles. Its the only way to know what it does on your "end"
