Poor Man's CLX50 disc?

I demoed the new Tarmac disc; great bike but geo wont work for me. But, I thought the wheels were fantastic for my type of geography / riding. They climbed well, rolled (and rolled), stiff (but not too stiff). They felt shallower than a 50.
Question; if I were to try and replicate that wheel in terms of width, weight, etc, what rim would do the trick? I know we are dealing w/DT hubs and spokes, but need help with rim. I could be comfortable dropping to a 45mm. The bike I am looking at will max out at 28mm tires so I need to be careful of rim ID.

If they'll fit then the Light Bicycle 46mm deep, 21mm internal, 28mm external rims, DT Swiss 240s hubs. Mine came in at 1435g for just under half the price of the clx50 disc and have been fantastic all rounders even in current windy UK conditions.
look for the narrow portions on the frame...probably atleast 36mm if designed for 28. The height is the tricky part to figure out under the fork crown and how the tires will deform.

Not sure if I totally understand what your concern, but remember that the outer width of the rim is only a concern for brake pad clearance (on rim brake bikes) and frame clearance, not tire fit (other than aerodynamics, and in that case wider is better with the rim ideally being equal to or wider than the tire). So in other words, your 25mm figure (which I assume is in reference to the outer width), is irrelevant in regard to tires. The inner width is the figure that will determine tire fit.
If your bike has clearance for 28mm tires (measured width not stated width), and you want to run the widest rubber you can, then I'd get those Light Bicycle rims referenced above, and put on tires that measure out to 28mm on them. Where it gets tricky is that many tires (like Contis) run big, so you would find a 25mm (stated size) tire would actually probably measure out to 28ish on those rims.

Thanks, that makes sense. I guess I don't really know how the manu measures for 28mm tire clearance. I'd assume they would simply say 'you have clearance for a measured 28mm tire assuming rim ID of X.'

It seems like the poor man's CLX50 would be a LightBicycle or Farsports wheel with DT hubs. Farsports also sells that rim in a 58mm and LB has a 55mm. Farsports also sells their 50mm wheels in 25mm wide (18mm internal).

I'd been looking at the LB 28mm wide U-shape 46mm rims previously, but was recently informed of these new ones in the "Open Mold Wide Profile" rim thread and am thinking about getting them myself. Dimensionally they are the most similar of the LB rims to the CLX50 (the LBs are ever so slightly wider), and they are actually 30 grams per pair lighter than the ones you linked to above to boot! That gets you down to the same weight range as the FSE set you mentioned (if you spec them 24/28 hole with 240 hubs) despite these being substantially wider. I am not sure if they come up in searches on the LB site yet, I just linked to them directly from the other thread. LB seems kind of slow with updating their site as they get new product. 24/24 w/DT240 is claimed 1526g @ $1124.
I am surprised these don't come in 20h option considering the depth. I think 20/24 would be ideal for my weight.
