There is some question as to who actually made the rim. It was an expensive rim, I do understand that price does not always mean quality, but this is a very high end rim that I took a little weight off. Right now my bike with this wheel on it weighs 7.56 lbs. On page. 5 of the most recent Galley section.

Hi donald, what model American Classic rim was this, before you modified it :-)

The guy I bought the rim/wheel from was an experienced track racer. He had a lot of wheels. He had a front and rear wheel for sale. He said they were Am. Classic, both had am. classic hubs, but no stickers on the rims. They were expensive wheels and the carbon fiber was of the highest quality, I think we all know there are many grades of carbon fiber. I could tell when I was removing material that this was some strong stuff. I have modified many carbon fiber parts and I have made some of my own parts from sheets of carbon. I'm not sure Am. classic made these rims but I believe the wheels were sold as a pair of Am. Classic wheels. This wheel is strong but, and I have no problems using it, but again, it is not an every day wheel.

Hi,

Either Reynolds or Edge, I suppose. I really don't see anything else in the ~200g/rim range.

Ciao, ;)

Nice example of what you can do to a rim, whilst still being able to ride it (is is a disc wheel though):

Wouldn't be good on a tubular though - not enough gluing area.

Hi,

It looks as if it actually IS a tubular wheel though.

Kind of funny how they drill these big holes in a rim that's really not worth bothering with to begin with and comes with an axle system that's made out of solid steel.... ( Old Campa Ghibli?)

Ciao, ;)

The wheel is actually a Fluidisk, a brand that I had never heard of before today. It is indeed a tubular wheel made for track use. Apparently also a pretty damn great wheel, so I guess the drilling does not cause any issues. The axle is titanium by the way.
