Re Zegho pricing:

...except, other glasses such as Giro Havik (which are excellent, but ?no longer available) have also featured Zeiss lenses, at half the price (or less) than the Zegho's -> no justification for the pricing, other than brand "cache" and brand cash! Fine if you want to, but don't be fooled by the technobabble....

Someone said that photochromic lenses are good for cycling. I couldn't disagree more, they are overtly dangerous, at least on the backroads in the Catskills where I ride. I don't know about you, but when I'm descending from a sunny hillside into a heavily shaded area, I don't want to wait 15 seconds for my lenses to adjust. This isn't something that happens occasionally, or even once per ride, more like dozens of times on every ride.

Assos got it really right with the abrupt transition between tint and clear, and I wouldn't be surprised if everyone starts following their lead.

I know they look odd but they are so much better than other sunglasses I've had that I don't really care. As I said in my review, it isn't often that a product comes along that so clearly improves the riding experience.

I guess the value of photochromics is relative to your own personal use and local conditions. I for one find them really useful, particularly starting in the dark and then finishing on a bright sunny day. Even for fast changing conditions, I can't see how they're any more dangerous than fixed darker shade sun glasses...

Sure the Assos glasses no doubt deal with abrupt changes better than glasses with a fixed dark shade, but do they deal with bright sunlight as well as a fixed dark shade glass does? Or, putting it another way, do the Assos glasses work any better in variable conditions than any other fixed clear or near to clear (eg: yellow) glass?

So it comes down to personal preference. Buy what you like and what works for you, not what someone else finds works in a different part of the world.

Cheers

GJ

Solid!

OT: I have some $8 glasses I got from a hardware store which look okay off my head but look sort of crappy on my head. They're no more than 26 grams, which I like, but I need to think about a better option. May go with Rudy Project, which I like.

The Zegho is expensive but I can imagine that Assos want to earn back their investment and deleopment costs. Assos took a risk with the Zegho that seems to work out fine.

Maybe you have to look like Chippo. What do you think?

I think the Werksmannschaft looks best on the bike (see Oscar F.) and the Noire looks best off the bike. The former for riding and the latter for the black suit at a funeral, alas.

Assos Zegho Noire, actually. The price was down 40% or so. But I'll keep my 006 with clear lenses in for the murkiest of days and darkest of evenings. :)

Those zegho glasses reminded me of the Gucci Shield sunglasses my wife owned four years ago, when they were all the hype.
The shields even came with the same case, only in black leather with Gucci print on them.

Having prescription glasses function is far more important to me then style. I think I own my Adidas Evil Eyes for 8 years now. the optical clip enables me to see clearly both on the bike and while I'm wearing the Jasper glasses during mountaineering trips. Both the Jasper and the Evil Eye have helped me lots in the alps and Himalaya.

Since others have added their own preferences in this thread, I'll add another option.

I currently use Tifosi's "Podium" frames, and bought a few extra lens since they are nicely interchangeable - just like the Salice and BBB mentioned, both great frames as well. The 'smoke' lens is the standard lens and is actually pretty great despite the low price. The other lens that gets a lot of use is the "Light Night Fototec" which has a surprisingly large range of tint, so I can wear it on rides before the sun has risen and continue to wear it throughout a bright day: it gets quite dark! There are a lot of options for different arm/frame colors if you check out their site, so you are not limited to just matte or gloss black.

Anyway, I like them. They're affordable, design isn't too bad, and very comfortable. Verified weight is 31g for the standard size. I tend to lose sunglasses or get them scratched up through use, so personally I try to avoid paying too much for something I may end up replacing within a year's worth of riding.

I bought Oakley M-Frames with (with Blue Iridium Sweep lenses) back in 1994. I've got the frame replaced twice (under warranty). I'm still using the same lenses. I bought some persimmon fog lenses a few years later.

They still do the job so I feel no need to change.
